Program Assessment Report
Student Learning Outcome #1

Develop competence in speaking and listening comprehension in Mandarin Chinese
RECORD OF ASSESSMENT
Begin generating a record of assessment for this Student Learning Outcome in which you record the
following areas of assessment activity. Start each entry with the semester in which the activity(s)
occurred followed by a description of the activity(s).These dates and activities should correspond with
the “Schedule of Assessment Activities” on the first page of this report.
I.
Data Collection:
[Spring 2008] – For this assessment cycle, how were the data collected and what were
the results?
Data were collected from Chin111 Advanced Chinese Conversation. Based on 4
listening comprehension quizzes given after watching films or listening to materials on
CD, 4 oral presentations on assigned subjects, and a final exam that tested mainly the
listening comprehension .
II.
What have you learn about this Student Learning Outcome?
[Spring 2008] – Based on the results in part I., briefly summarize the discussion surrounding
this outcome, i.e., what does the faculty conclude about student learning for this SLO?
Data were collected from a class of seven, among whom only 1 was a Chinese major. This
student met the Learning Objective easily, as the class was designed for non-native Chinese
speaker, and this student had extensive exposure to Mandarin Chinese since childhood. Her
personal objective of taking this class is not so much to improve her oral proficiency as to
learn how to teach Chinese language, which she achieved by serving as a tutor to other
students, as well as incorporating what she learned in this class in her job as a teacher’s aid
in a high school Chinese class.
III.
SAction Item(s) (if necessary):
[Fall 2008] – Based on the discussion in part II., what actions will the department take to
improve student learning, e.g., program changes, changes in pedagogy, process changes,
resources requests, etc?
The faculty of the Chinese Program will hold a meeting in September 2008 to decide actions
to improve student learning.

[Spring 2008] – For this assessment cycle, how were the data collected and what were the
results?
The data were collected from the class of Chin101B Advanced Chinese, including 4 written
tests, 1 essay and 4 one-page writing assignments. All students met the SLO #4.
II.
What have you learn about this Student Learning Outcome?
[Spring 2008] – Based on the results in part I., briefly summarize the discussion surrounding
this outcome, i.e., what does the faculty conclude about student learning for this SLO?

to one-page compositions. Students showed improved accuracy in their wordings and
sentence structures.
III.

The faculty of the Chinese Program will meet before the next time Chin101B is offered (Sp
2009) to decide if any action is necessary.
