ANNOUNCING FELLOWSHIPS AT THE CENTER FOR THE HUMANITIES
The Center for the Humanities at the CUNY Graduate Center invites applications for two full-time
residencies and eight release-time fellowships for the 2005-2006 academic year. Mellon Resident
Humanities Fellows will receive full release from undergraduate teaching to spend the academic year at
the Graduate Center, pursuing their research and helping to coordinate an interdisciplinary seminar.
Faculty who receive release-time fellowships will be relieved of their responsibilities to teach one course
in both the fall, 2005 and the spring, 2006 semesters.
The theme of the fellowship program for 2005-2006 will be “Aesthetics and Politics:”
Questions about the moral imperative of art, the relationship between the beautiful and the
sacred, and the role of the poet/artist in the public sphere are usually pursued within the
parameters set by the thinkers and artists of the Enlightenment and Romantic periods. Might
fresh perspectives be brought to these questions by interrogating the relationships between the
aesthetic and the political realms as they are described and enacted in other cultures and
historical periods?
In the 2005-6 Mellon Seminar at the Center for the Humanities, we invite applications from
scholars whose work explores the relationship between art and politics or, more broadly
conceived, between culture and society.
Full-time faculty members in the social sciences and humanities whose research is consonant with this
focus are encouraged to apply. All applicants will be considered for both the Mellon Residence
Humanities fellowships and for the course-release fellowships. Mellon Resident Humanities Fellows are
funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with additional funding from the office of
the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
