Description (or Proposed Degree Requirements)
An advanced study of reading assessment instruments used for understanding the individual and diverse
needs of all grade-level readers including reading inventories, miscue analysis, and pausing indices.
Students will use assessment data to plan, evaluate, and revise effective reading instruction that meets the
diverse needs of students. Current trends and issues in testing and assessment in U.S. schools will be
studied. A field component is required. The prerequisite for EDRD 7719 is EDRD 7715. Even though
EDRD 7719 is the preferred last course in the sequence in the Reading Endorsement, candidates may
simultaneously enroll in EDRD 7718.
III.
Justification
The preferred sequencing of the courses in the Reading Endorsement is EDRD 7715, EDRD
7718, and EDRD 7719, respectively. In EDRD 7719, candidates must demonstrate their ability to
positively impact student learning/reading abilities using a simplified action research framework.
This project requires them to apply the knowledge, skills and dispositions that they have acquired
in the other courses in the Reading Endorsement. The proposed change in the numerical
sequence of courses will represent and reflect the curriculum framework and course requirements
within the program.
Currently, there are no pre-requisites for any of the courses in the Reading Endorsement which
means that students enter the instructional sequence at all points. This situation was difficult for
the students who did not have the background knowledge to understand complex content without
an undo amount of study. Requiring a preferred sequence will assist students, and faculty, alike.
