This course provides a comprehensive overview of the leadership organizational issues of public
education today. The focus of the course is on the systemic changes of leadership in teachers
and administrators within the structure of school organization.

Text: Owens, R. G. (2004). Organizational behavior in education. (8th ed.) New York: Allyn and
Bacon.
Prerequisites: Admission to Doctoral Program
Objectives:
This course is designed as one of the core courses for the Ed.S. Program of Educational
Leadership, Technology Leadership, Early Childhood Education, Adolescent Education, and
Special Education. Credit (3 hours) will be given to candidates toward completion of their L-5
certification requirements. The course is designed to provide candidates with knowledge of the
roles, responsibilities, and challenges of teacher leaders and administrators in changing
educational organizations. The Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC) standards
provide a guiding framework for the development of the course.
The following objectives are specifically developed for this course:
This course combines instruction about the tasks associated with teacher and administrative
leadership. The course objectives are to provide candidates with the following
competencies:
1. Understanding school functions as an organizational structure.
2. Knowledge and application of the mainstreams of organizational thought
3. Identifying organizational theories of modern times
4. Understanding the importance of organizational culture and climate in schools
5. Recognizing systemic changes in school organization
6. Synthesizing the roles, responsibilities, collaboration of teacher leaders and
administrators
7. Understanding the essence of decision making in educational leadership
8. Realizing the strategies of conflict management in educational organizations
9. Recognizing motivation as a key factor of organizational improvement
10. Identifying and exercising communication skills in organizational leadership
11. Recognizing how teacher and administrator leadership work in school reform initiatives.
Instructional Method :
COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS:
1. Passing of the Mid-term and Final Examinations are required.
2. Completion of review of two current journal articles on educational leadership is
required.
3. Completion of interviews about organizational changes with a teacher leader and a school
administrator is required.
