This course is designed to develop understanding and skills in the areas of leadership and
advanced administration in the context of sport and recreation organizations from small
to large both within the U.S. and abroad. Effective leadership, leadership skills and
styles, fiscal management, policy formation and modification, decision making, planning,
and evaluating will be explored within the context of sport.
III.
Justification
This is one of six foundational courses in the M.S. in Comparative Sport Management
program. Through the study of the leadership and administrative process and issues in
sport management both domestically and globally, students will be able to demonstrate
an understanding of the nature and function of administration, supervision, and program
leadership in sport organizations. Students will be exposed to diverse approaches to sport
management so that they will understand the strengths and weaknesses with the purpose
to develop the leadership and problem-solving skills needed to succeed as sport
management practitioners in local, national, and international settings. The learning
environment will extend beyond the classroom by taking advantage of the many sports
events and organizations operating in Georgia and globally through collaboration and
video conferencing with our international partners.

Objectives:
As a result of successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the managerial processes frequently employed in
managing sport and recreation programs.
2. Identify the critical issues of leadership and management within a variety of program
delivery settings both within the United States and abroad (e.g. community, nonprofit agencies, corporate or private business, local and international).
3. Analyze and evaluate the efficacy of program initiatives in sport and recreation
settings.
4. Research, develop, and modify budgets relative to the organization setting.
5. Identify and demonstrate effective measures in personnel evaluation.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of strategic planning and organizational changes
processes relative to various work settings.
Instructional Method
During this course students will demonstrate an understanding of the nature & function of
administration and supervision, and program leadership (abilities & skills) through the discussion
of pertinent readings, responses in role playing, debates, and other active learning exercises, and
other creative written work regarding selected topics of interest. The primary method of
instructional delivery will be lecture/discussion with some video conferencing with our global
partners.

The primary revenue sources will be from the reallocation of existing funds through the
shifting of teaching workloads and the addition of two existing unfilled faculty lines. The
estimates above are based on the average graduate faculty course load of six courses per
year and the average annual salary of $65,000. These are averages are for simplicity and
actual salaries and course workloads will vary by personnel. The calculations assume
that the sport management faculty teach all but one of the courses offered (EHS 6630,
which is already offered as part of the M.S. in AEHS). There will be a small revenue
generation during the summer from enrollment in this program.

This form will be completed by the requesting department and will be sent to the Office of the
Registrar once the course has been approved by the Office of the President.

CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to develop understanding and skills in the areas of leadership and

and evaluating will be explored within the context of sport.

PURPOSE/RATIONALE:
Through the study of management issues within sport organizations, students will be able to demonstrate an
understanding of the nature and function of management, supervision, and leadership.
Use of Technology: Technology is important to the research process. Students will participate in the
literature review process using computers. Vista will be used to post supplemental course materials, course
schedule, access grades, as well as provide students access to utilize chat rooms and discussion boards to
communicate. Multi media will be used in lecture and student presentations in class.
Multicultural Education: Multicultural and global perspectives are examined in terms of the impact of
religion, ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic factors upon recreation and leisure patterns.
Diversity: Kennesaw State University provides program accessibility and reasonable accommodations for
