Course Description: This course will focus on the causes, assessment and treatment of
abnormal behavior. Diagnosis according to the criteria set forth in the DSM will be a
major emphasis in this endeavor.
Requirements: (or How to be a success in Psy 5080). Your active involvement in this
course is the best way to assure your success. Your final grade will be based on the
following:
1. Class attendance and active participation (20% of final grade). Each week you
are to review a current article relevant to the assigned topic(s). You will be
expected to give a brief oral presentation and provide me with a one-page
review of the article.
2. Each week you are to turn in a one page review of the week’s reading.
3. Book review: You are to select a book that gives personal insight into one or
more of the disorders that we will cover in this course. Suggested length: 5
pages. Your report to the class on this book can be presented at any class
session between 2/4 and 3/4. (10% of final grade)
4. Examinations: Midterm and Final. Each exam is worth 35% of the final grade

Missed Exam Policy: Any make up exams must be arranged with me prior to the
scheduled exam. If you wait to contact me after the exam you will not be able to make
up the exam.
