Approval of Minutes1/23/07 NEW BUSINESS Approval Motion to approve minutes as written (Vargas/Wilson) passed unanimously. Approved as written. 2nd reading was waived to meet February 22, 2007 deadline (Smith/ Cucovatz) 1. Authorization to Apply for Grant 1st Reading Tricia Evans presented the CAA Grant, a $1.5 million consortium of Orange County colleges for placing people who are not currently in these industries (including SCC, OEC students, Goodwill and Rescue Mission patrons) “into the pipeline” for high demand careers in survey, water science and public works. Golden State and PSOMAS corporations are online to hire these students. If the grant is approved, SCC will receive $215,000 of the $1.5 million. The deadline for submission is February 22, with a start date of June 30th, and duration of one year. Tricia plans to offer extra hours to existing employees for the short-term positions funded by the grant. 2. Partners in Education Award Nominations Chancellor’s Ball, November 2, 2007 Discussion The President opened nominations from the College Council for the Partners in Education Award recognized at the next Chancellor’s Ball. Current nominations under consideration are: a. Maintenance/Superintendent Association (funded $75,000 for the SCC demonstration garden) b. Metropolitan Water District c. California Land Surveyors Association d. Coast Keepers (maybe next year) e. OUSD (maybe in a year or two for the Jump Start Program) 3. RSCCD Functions/Mapping of Responsibilities Information The hard copy of RSCCD Functions/Mapping of Responsibilities is included in the Self Study on the SCC website. A few functions have changed, including establishment of a distinct SCC Financial Aid Office and a SCC Community Services Office. There will be one grand map of the District/SAC/SCC. If there are questions, go to the website. The President suggested that Chairs look at the existing document. Julie Slark is the district point person and the end of April is the target date for completion. This document is required for the SAC Self-Study, but not for the SCC Abbreviated Self-Study. Information There are six faculty positions and six classified positions approved for SCC. The President requested that the divisions move ahead with hiring to fill these positions. The President encouraged council members to meet Steven Reed, the new hire in the History Department. 4. Approved Positions, 2007 PROGRAM UPDATES 1. Associated Student Body: Meg Rothi 2. Continuing Education: Jose Vargas No report Information The work on the sidewalk to Katella started on 2/12/07. The paperwork required for S.B. 361 was completed for the Board docket. There is a deadline of February 28, 2007. 3. Classified Advisory Group: Diane Durdella Information Diane Durdella reported that the February 6th meeting was held at OEC and included a tour. The next meeting will be March 6th. 4. Communications: AnnMarie Librescu Information The advertising for Spring 07 was successful. Currently working on the Lost Boys, Trig Star and Model United Nations. The new Orange Magazine is doing an article on the Year of the Library featuring the new Chapman University, City of Orange and Santiago Canyon College libraries. AnnMarie attended a meeting for the Year of the Library where coordinating events for the three new libraries was discussed, including a concurrent October event. The dedication of the Orange City Library will be on April 21, 2007, 10:00 a.m. 5. Technology: Curt Childress Information The new Associate Vice Chancellor of Information Technologies Services, Sylvia LaTourneau, is from Chapman University and has Datatel experience, primarily with student services. Curt also reported that Windows is going to Vista Operating System and there may be problems with daylight savings time. He will be checking with Sylvia about how this will affect the College. The President reported that the District-wide Technology Committee will be reinstituted. 6. Budget/Facilities/Admin Services: Steve Kawa Information Steve reported on three projects: 1. A lighted campus directory sign will be placed in the A-B quad, designed to be easily revised. 2. Filling-in of the Fountain Plaza with dirt, stone and pavers for safety 3. The Chancellor approved an SCC gymnasium. A group of SCC employees toured the Mater Dei gym and will share their report at the February 26th meeting of the Facility Committee. 7. Curriculum and Instruction Committee: Linda Cucovatz Information . Linda reported: 1. The Catalog Committee met and will be ordering 3,000 catalogs for 07/08. 2. 8. Educational Master Plan Committee/Academic Senate: Rosi Enriquez Information Updates included: forensics; list of sports at SCC; and common curriculum Mary reported that all equipment requests were met with some help from VTEA and Basic Skills funds, including: 1. 100 computers were replaced 2. new media was installed in the high usage lecture rooms 3. new lap tops were purchased and may be checked out by staff and faculty for business-related needs No report Rosi reported that she was receiving narratives. Goals were reviewed at the Senate Retreat during Flex Week. Rosi asked if there was a possibility of SAC/SCC collaboratively purchasing the Turnitin anti-plagiarizing software with a purchase price of $10,000/year. Cari Cannon suggested that approval for purchase of this software be based on the number of faculty who will be utilizing it and asked if it could be chunked. Linda Cucovatz thought that the price could be based on the number of papers submitted. 11. President: Juan Vázquez Information Linda Cucovatz will research cost for Turnitin based on the number of papers submitted. Partnership in Excellence was used in the past as an accountability method. The Report for Community Colleges uses measurable outcomes including student achievement rates. SCC is too new of a college to be placed in a peer group.
