GOESR3 Periodic Reporting Project Team: Reporting Period: September 2012 - February 2013 Team Lead: Team Members: Shobha Kondragunta Qiang Zhao Project Title: Assimilation of GOES-R ABI Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) in a Regional Air Quality Model to Improve Surface PM2.5 Forecasts Project Number: 53 Executive Summary Because NCEP has temporarily suspended aerosol assimilation activities, we have been working towards a revised set of milestones and deliverables (see below). The latest versions of the Community Multi-scale Air Quality (CMAQ) modelling system and the emission processing system Sparse Matrix Operator Kernel Emissions (SMOKE) have been installed and tested on one of STAR machines. The National Emissions Inventory (NEI) data sets are being collected for whole scale model testing and simulations. Milestones Port Community Multi-scale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system to STAR computers. Build a standalone GSI system capable of assimilating satellite derived aerosol products (proxy GOES-R data – GOES and MODIS AODs) into CMAQ model. Accomplishments & Plans Accomplishments: 1. Configured and installed prerequisite software packages for CMAQ on one of STAR 64-bit Linux machines: a. The Network Common Data Form (netCDF) version 4.2.1.1 with netCDF FORTRAN libraries built. b. The Input/Output Application Programmers Interface (IOAPI) version 3.1. 2. Configured and installed CMAQ modelling system version 5.0.1 on STAR machines. Setup and ran the following model components for a benchmark test: a. Initial conditions pre-processor ICON; b. Boundary conditions pre-processor BCON; c. Photolysis rate processor JPROC; d. CMAQ Chemical Transport Model CCTM. 3. Developed a CMAQ model output verification package capable of extracting, computing and visualizing any CMAQ model variable in any model layer with appropriate contour levels on the fly. 4. Configured and installed the emission processing system SMOKE version 3.1 on STAR machines. A test case with whole set of emission types has been processed and verified. 07/27/2016 GOES-R3 Status Report Template NESDIS STAR GOES-R 5. The National Emissions Inventory 2008 V2 and Particular Matter (PM) NAAQS 2007v5 platform data sets have been collected from EPA. Data formats and structures have been studied. Future Plans 1. Develop a software package to convert NCEP NAM model output to CMAQ ready data files in netCDF/IOAPI format. 2. Reconfigure the CMAQ and SMOKE models for simulation studies on domains of interest. 3. Build a standalone GSI system capable of assimilating satellite derived aerosol products (proxy GOES-R data – GOES and MODIS AODs) into CMAQ model. Additional Information 1. Interaction with operational partners – NCEP 2. Conference/workshop participation – 3. Funding concerns – 4. Outside project publicity – GOES-R Air Quality Proving Ground activities 5. Journal articles – Article in preparation for submission to JGR-Atmospheres Plans for the next Reporting Period: Finish the paper and submit it.
