The basics: Classroom to Community (C2C) is a semester-long professional development volunteer program under the Student Health Action Coalition (SHAC) at UNC-Chapel Hill that puts you in a new kind of classroom. You will spend time at UNC learning critical skills in teaching and leadership, then practice teaching in 4th-8th grade classrooms at Maureen Joy Charter School, in Durham. This is a collaborative, interdisciplinary volunteer experience designed for graduate students in the health sciences. We also encourage undergraduates who can demonstrate a high level of professionalism to apply. Classroom to Community sessions will meet weekly during evenings for an hour and a half at the School of Public Health during the spring semester. The weekday will be determined based on group availability. Participants are expected to attend every seminar session. During the last two months of the semester, participants will travel to Maureen Joy to teach four, one-hour health lessons in their own classroom of approximately 20 students. What Do People Have to Say About C2C? “Classroom to Community is the most important program that Maureen Joy Charter works with. They are vital to our mission of educating our students for success in high school, college and the competitive world beyond.” - Chrissie Bushey, Maureen Joy School Counselor IMPORTANT INFORMATION/FAQ ABOUT CLASSROOM TO COMMUNITY (Please read before submitting your application) Q: Do I get course credit for participating in Classroom to Community? A: While there is not direct credit for acceptance and participation in C2C, many volunteers have successfully sought out their own independent study or practicum study credit with a professor in their department (typically receiving 3 credits). If you are interested in gaining credit you must secure a sponsoring professor ASAP. We are happy to support your process by providing sample independent study applications and a course syllabus, however, much of this depends on your own early initiative. Q: How many hours per week should I anticipate for participation? A: You should expect about 3-4 hours per week in the beginning of the program between meetings and preparation for your lessons. Training sessions are weekly for 1.5 hours during the evening with optional 30 minutes of additional supported work time. During teaching weeks in early March-end of April, you should expect about 6-7 hours per week between meetings, preparation, and travel/teaching. Biggest time factor is that you will need one 3-hour block of time, one day of the week during school hours (8:00 am - 2:30 pm) available in your schedule for carpool travel and teaching (4 times). Q: What are the dates and times of the required training sessions? A: Seminar sessions will be held weekly starting in early January and going until late April/early May. These are typically in the evenings at SPH, and will be determined based off of volunteer schedules and announced early January. Timing of classroom teaching will be dependent on your schedule, but will occur 4 times during early March-late April. Q: What costs are associated with participation? A: C2C and SHAC pay for all needed materials for lesson plans and teaching (as well as printing if timing deadlines met). At most participants may be responsible for covering the expense of gas back and forth to the school site if they choose to drive themselves, however, carpooling is encouraged and in most cases provided by leadership. Some funding for travel has also been secured. Q: How do I get to Maureen Joy Charter School? A: While buses do not run to our school site, you are not required to have a vehicle for participation in C2C. Carpooling will be coordinated by the leadership team. However, if you would like to drive yourself you are welcome to, as long as you guarantee arriving on time. Q: Do I need to have prior teaching experience or coursework to participate? A: No! Overall, we are looking for people who are interested in learning and want to grow as educators, community partners, and leaders. Q: Who teaches Classroom to Community? A: Classroom to Community will be led by a dynamic group of current health sciences students who are passionate about the intersection of health and education.
