3. Community – a place that is made up of many neighborhoods. There are
many stores in my community.
4. Map – a drawing that shows you where places are located.
5. Symbols – pictures that stand for things on a map. She found the symbol of
a park on the map.
6. Map key – tells what the symbols on a map mean. The map key helps us read
the map.
7. Cardinal directions – the four main directions: north, east, south, west
8. History – the story of people, events, and places from the past.
9. Urban – a type of area that is made up of a city and the places around it.
Downtown Pittsburgh is an urban area.
10. Suburb – a type of community that is located near a city. Wexford is a
suburb of Pittsburgh.
11. Rural – an area with small communities and open space. The small
communities are called towns, and they are far apart. The farm is in a rural
area.
12. Capital – the place where the leaders of a state work. Harrisburg is the
capital of Pennsylvania.
The state where I live is Pennsylvania.
My state flower is the Mountain Laurel.
My state bird is the Ruffed Grouse.
