Dear 2C Parents, Welcome back to school! The purpose of this letter is to simply fill you in on a few things that will be happening at school and in our classroom during the year. It covers some of the basics such as special schedules and school policies, as well as some of my personal expectations for the students this year. Please also review the district calendar, Peebles website, and my website as important information is located in those areas in an effort to ‘go green’. Weekly Specials: Monday: Integrated Arts 9:30-10:30 Tuesday: Music 2:30-3:15 Wednesday: PE 2:30-3:15 (Don’t forget your shoes!) Thursday: Library 2:30-3:15 (Don’t forget your books!) Friday: Art 2:30-3:15 Mon.-Fri.: Lunch 11:30-12:00 Mon.-Fri.: Recess 12:00-12:30 Absent Procedures: If your child is absent from school, it is necessary that you send a written excuse with your child when he/she returns to school. If your child is going to be late coming to school, please pack a lunch or call the school prior to 9:20 a.m. to order a lunch. Assignment Books: In an effort to go paperless, assignment books will be extremely important. Each student received an assignment notebook on the first day of school. I require my students to write the assignments in their books daily even if they do not have homework. There may be important test dates and events that need to be recorded. I ask that you please check the assignment book every night to keep him/her on the right track. It is your child’s responsibility to get the book signed. If you write me a note in your child’s assignment book it is their responsibility to show it to me! Homework Policy: Homework is to benefit the student and has several advantages which include reinforcement of curricular materials, enrichment of curricular materials, and extensions of skills learned in the classroom. In addition, homework teaches responsibility, organization, and time management. Making mistakes on homework is ok; that is how one learns. However, it is not acceptable if you are not trying. While I do feel homework is important, I also realize that children need time to relax, socialize, get some exercise, and connect with friends and family after a busy day at school. I will usually give homework each night (typically math, spelling, and communication arts), but I will try to avoid giving a lot of homework on the weekends. If your child seems legitimately overwhelmed by homework, kindly let me know. My role is to facilitate the learning process, and I want to be sure that the learning process is an exciting one for my students, not a stressful one. If there is an issue, we can work together to determine the cause and possible solutions. I am happy to do that in order for my students to achieve academically. You can expect your child to spend more time on homework on the nights before important tests or when working on special projects. Of course, your child will be notified of these types of assignments well in advance. Each student received an assignment book on the first day of school. As a class, we have started and will continue to record daily assignments. I ask that you review the assignment book every evening with your child to keep him/her on the right track. Assignment Notices: I view homework assignments as opportunities for students to practice skills and concepts on their own. It is important that your child complete the homework assignments to the best of his/her ability. I do check for completion of assignments. Homework assignments that are not complete or not turned in will be recorded. After each missed/incomplete homework assignment a Missed Assignment Notice will be stapled to the missed/incomplete assignment. This notice is a communication tool, not a punishment. Please sign the assignment notice, and your child will be required to return both the signed notice and the completed assignment the next day. Peebles Take Home Folders: In order to keep you informed about your child’s progress, you’re child will be bringing home a daily folder. This folder will contain the miscellaneous items, tests, quizzes, and graded assignments your child has completed over the past week of school. Please review your child’s scores and papers so that you have a clear understanding of his/her grades and important second grade concepts and skills. Bus & Parent Pick Up Information: Your child will be sent home on the bus daily unless we have a parental note stating otherwise. If your child is picked up routinely, one note can be kept on file in the office, stating the days of pick up per week. If there are changes in your child’s dismissal procedure please send in a note letting me know of the change. I will be sure to post this as a reminder. Recess/Room Temperature: The room temperature can be very unpredictable at times and doesn’t always respond to adjustments to the thermostat. Your child may want to dress in layers or keep a sweater or sweatshirts in his/her backpack. The children will be outside for recess unless it is raining or extremely cold. Please dress your child suitably, despite weather conditions that morning. Thirty minutes of recess can be a long time if your child is not dressed appropriately. Also, please put label all of your child’s jackets and accessories to avoid confusion when it’s time to get ready to go outside. Birthdays: Birthday treats in non-edible form are highly encouraged for birthday celebrations (pencils, erasers, small trinkets, or small games for the classroom). However, if you are considering sending an edible treat, I will need a copy of the ingredients 48 hours ahead of time. We take the edible treats to lunch with us; therefore, it must be here by 11:15 pm. No drinks are necessary, but napkins would be appreciated. Those students who have birthdays in the summer may bring in a treat on their “half-birthdays.” Tissues: With the cold season right around the corner, we will be using a lot of tissues. Please send a box of tissues to school with your child sometime in the next few weeks in you have not already done so. We will all benefit from them! I will also provide several boxes throughout the year. Thank you! Contacting me: The best way to get in contact with me is by e-mail. You can also send a note in with your child. I check my e-mail periodically throughout the day. I will respond to any questions, comments, or concerns during the work day when I have available time. If you need to get an urgent message to me during the school day, please call the office and leave a message with the secretary. I will do my best to return phone calls as soon as possible. Open Door Policy: I am here to help you. If you have any school related issues please make arrangements to speak with me immediately. I cannot solve a problem that I am unaware of. Please do not let the issue go on too long as it becomes more difficult to correct. I am available to talk to you before school, after school, or any other available time that may I have. Let’s make this a team effort! If I left any questions unanswered, please feel free to contact me. Curriculum Night on September 10, 2015 in room 21/2C will further address issues regarding curriculum and grading policies. I am looking forward to teaching your child and working closely with you to ensure your child’s success! Here’s to a great school year! Sincerely, Mrs. Lynn Antoon
