Vocabulary
Consumer – Animals are consumers and get their food from their habitat.
Large animals often need a lot of food, water, and space. Small animals often
do not need as much to eat and drink as large animals.
Producer – A producer is a living thing that can make its own food.
Predator – A predator is an animal that catches and eats another animal.
Food Chain – Plants use sunlight, air, and water to make food. Animals eat
the plants. Other animals eat those animals. This is called a food chain.
Food Web – A food web is made up of the food chains in a habitat.
Habitat – Habitat is another word for environment. An animal’s environment
is all the living and nonliving things around it. Animals need air, water,
shelter, and space to live in a habitat.
Plants and Animals Helping Each Other:
• Some animals build their nests out of parts of plants and fur or feathers
from other animals.
• When a bird called an egret sits on top of a rhinoceros and eats flies both
animals are being helped. The egret gets to eat, and the egret stops the flies
from hurting the rhinoceros.
• When a cardinal fish lives near a sea urchin it is protected from other
animals. The sharp spines of the sea urchin keep other animals away. The
cardinal fish does not help or hurt the sea urchin.
• People can help animals too. If there is an oil spill in the ocean, the ocean
food web can be harmed. People can help by washing the oil off of the
animals. They can also clean the water and make it safe again.

The seaweed is a producer because it can make its own food. The crab, sea
otter, and orca are all consumers because they eat food found in their habitat.
