Atlantis: A City of Wonders
It is described as a luxurious island built of gold and lost under the sea. This vanished continent
is rumored to be a dreamlike place filled with alluring gardens, exotic smells and flawless weather all
year round. Then, suddenly, it sinks into the depths of the sea. There are many theories on how
Atlantis sunk and what it used to look like before the massive eruption. Humans may never know if
Atlantis is an actual place or just an imaginary myth.
Most people believe that Atlantis is a lost continent, most likely located beneath the mystic
Atlantic Ocean. Plato, a Greek philosopher, was the first person to write a full account of the sunken
island. In his published book, he described the people living in Atlantis as highly advanced citizens. In
the center of the continent was a city built by gold and ivory. The city was shaped like a perfect circle,
with alternating rings of water and land. At the very center of this main city was The Temple of
Poseidon, a god of water. Located on the rings of land circling the golden temple were deluxe mansions
built of fine ivory. There were also marketplaces, shops, and extravagant gardens. Then, as quick as a
flash, this amazing fantasy of gold was gone forever.
There are many theories on how the gorgeous island of Atlantis disappeared. Some scientists
believe that Atlantis was once a part of Santorini, an island near Greece. It was said that many years ago
a volcano located in the middle of Santorini exploded. The hot lava and thick smoke caused Atlantis to
flip over and sink down to the ocean’s floor. Currently, Santorini rises steeply out of the sea. The
vertical edge may have once been connected to Atlantis. Another theory of how Atlantis disappeared
includes Pangaea. Pangaea shows how all of the seven continents had once fit together like tight puzzle
pieces. Then, the continents began to slowly drift outwards into the places we know today. Currently
though, if you piece the continents back together, they will not form a complete puzzle. Scientists
believe that the missing gap between North America and Europe may be Atlantis.
Lastly, many rare things have been sighted near the estimated area of Atlantis. Some people
claim that they have seen birds flying from Europe to South America. These birds circle constantly over
a specific area above the Atlantic Ocean. Humans believe that these birds may be “remembering” the
lost city of Atlantis. In addition, the name Atlantis has appeared in many cultural tribe stories around
the world.
In conclusion, Atlantis is an exotic place with special mysteries and wonders. With new
technology and information, this great mystery will one day be solved. For now though, this luxurious
golden island still remains one of the greatest mysteries on earth.
