Point of View (POV) The point of view is basically who is telling the story. You have three general options: 1. First Person POV When a character in the story is telling the story from his or her point of view Key words: I, we, me, etc. Example: o I woke up this morning starving! All I could think about was what I was going to eat when I got to Paneras. I knew that a cinnamon crunch bagel would be the perfect way to start my day! 2. Third Person Limited POV Someone who is not in the story is telling it; however, they only know as much as one (or a few) of the characters know. Key words: he, she, they, etc. Example: o Mrs. O woke up starving! All she could think about was what she was going to eat when she got to Paneras. A cinnamon crunch bagel would be the perfect way to get her day started! 3. Third Person Omniscient POV Someone who is not in the story is telling it; however, they are omniscient (all-knowing), so they know EVERYTHING that is happening with all characters. Key words: he, she, they, etc. Example: o Mrs. O woke up starving! All she could think about was what she was going to eat when she got to Paneras. At about that same time, Ian sold the last two cinnamon crunch bagels to an elderly couple. “People aren’t going to be happy to see that those are sold out,” he said to himself while he rang them up.
