1C News Important Dates for April/May April 29—Variety Show & Miss Covic’s last day May 6—Taste of Johnson Dear Parents: As we wind down our last trimester of 1st grade (hard to believe isn’t it?), the students are really coming into their own. Each of the students has made great progress with their reading, writing and overall growth as students. Students have really been working hard and have grown so much since the beginning of the year. I hope you have seen as much development in your child’s abilities as I have seen in the classroom. This last trimester we will be studying butterflies and fish for our animal units. The caterpillars are here and we are hoping to see some chrysalises next week. In May we will start our fish unit— which will culminate with our trip to the Shedd Aquarium. In math we are working on 2 digit addition and word problems. We continue to practice facts and I ask that you continue to help your child learn their basic facts either by testing them with flashcards or other apps for tablets or on the computer. Spelling will continue to focus on long vowel patterns. In reading we continue to read both fiction and non-fiction and write facts or events about the story or text and also answer questions about the texts. We continue to work on our writing both the formation of letters and the different writing types of expository, narrative and persuasive. As the weather turns warmer please remember if your child is going home a different way to send a note with your child or let the office know. I can’t promise that I can check emails every day before dismissal so a note or an email in the morning is the best way to let me know. As you can see above, Miss Covic’s last day will be April 29th. Thank you to all the parents who sent in money for the class basket for the Taste of Johnson. If you would still like to donate we are asking for $1.00 per student. As always if you have any questions or concerns please contact me via email, phone call or note or see me in the car rider line. Have a great rest of the week! Mr. Corbett
