Resource News Mrs. Lendy Resource Room September 2, 2015 Welcome! Words Their Way I hope your summer was relaxing and filled with family, friends and fun! I look forward to a wonderful year of learning and growth. I am excited to be a part of your child’s school experience. For those families who I have worked with in the past, welcome back. I look forward to working with the new Kindergarten students this year, too. The school district has moved away this year from traditional spelling tests. Instead, we will be using a program called Words Their Way. This program will be used in conjunction with the new phonics program-part of the Fountas and Pinnell reading program used in the district. For first and second grade students, this weekly newsletter will be the main source of communication regarding what your son or daughter is working on in the resource room. As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have as the school year progresses. I check my email daily, or, if you prefer, a phone call to Lincoln is also an option. Kindergarten newsletters will be sent out monthly. They tend to work on the same skills/behaviors for a bit longer. I post newsletters on my district webpage, and can also print out hard copies if computer accessibility is an issue. What is Words Their Way? Words Their Way (WTW) is a developmental word study program. WTW is an approach to spelling and word knowledge that is based on extensive research on how children spell and read. Students benefit from differentiated instruction in phonics, spelling and vocabulary. To accomplish this goal, students are taught how to examine words to learn the regularities that exist in the English Language. They are also taught some irregularities. The process of sorting words into categories is the basis of the Words Their Way. When students sort words, they are engaged in the active process of searching, comparing, contrasting, and analyzing. Word sorts help students organize what they know about words and to form generalizations that they can then apply to new words they encounter in their reading. As they demonstrate mastery, they move through developmental stages. Students are placed into appropriate cooperative learning groups based on an initial assessment. Activities are completed throughout the week, which are designed to reinforce and develop spelling skills. A word list will be sent home with your child each week. Your child’s classroom teacher will determine the appropriate list of words. My role will be to reinforce and provide extra practice/assistance with this program as needed. Those students who see me in the resource room for academic support have been given a folder to take home daily. It will contain items such as word rings, mini readers/books, word lists, math sheets or writing tasks. Please get into the habit of looking for and checking this folder daily. At the very least, your child should be practicing the small readers, word rings, and word lists daily. A few minutes each day will go a long way to establishing good reading habits and help build successful students. I will be sure to communicate homework expectations with you either by this newsletter or a note in your child’s resource folder. For your Calendar: Sept 7 Labor Day-No School ` Resource Minutes QUOTE OF Your child has either direct minutes, where he/she comes to work in the resource room, integration minutes, where I work with your child in the classroom setting, or a combination of both. This information can be found in your child’s IEP paperwork. If you have any questions regarding your child’s resource minutes, please feel free to contact me. I work very closely with your child’s classroom teacher to ensure your child is receiving the best possible supplemental instruction with minimal interruption to his/her school day/routines. “Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work.” -Aristotle Homework for the Week Each will there will be a section of the newsletter to communicate resource homework expectations. This section will be for first graders unless otherwise indicated. I will not be giving any homework out this week. This first newsletter was longer due to the welcome and expectations and explanations of the resource program. Successive newsletters will be shorter!! Thanks for reading.
