AGENCY GOALS & OBJECTIVES:
The mission of BCHD is to advocate, lead, and provide services of the highest quality in order to promote and
protect the health of the residents of Baltimore.
DEPARTMENT GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:
Baltimarket is a suite of BCHD community-based food access and food justice programs. Baltimarket’s mission
is to improve the health and wellness of Baltimore City residents by using food access and food justice as
strategies for community transformation. Baltimarket programs include the Virtual Supermarket, Healthy
Stores, and Neighborhood Food Advocates. The Virtual Supermarket is the flagship Baltimarket program: the
first community-based program in the county to use online grocery ordering and delivery to bring food to
community sites in food desert neighborhoods. Healthy Stores is a multi-level program that supports corner
stores in stocking healthier items, organizes youth as Neighborhood Food Advocates, and conducts nutrition
education in grocery stores. Neighborhood Food Advocates works in tandem with the Virtual Supermarket and
Healthy Stores programs to engage and organize residents in food desert communities.

INTERNSHIP INFORMATION (How might your organization use and improve a health education
student’s skills and knowledge?):
Interns for the Baltimarket program will conduct a variety of nutrition education and public health activities to
support the Virtual Supermarket, Healthy Stores, and Neighborhood Food Advocates. Each internship
opportunity will be tailored to the program’s needs and to the student’s interests. Possible work includes:
 Implementation of a community-based nutrition education curriculum that demonstrates cooking of
healthy, affordable foods at Virtual Supermarket Program sites, Healthy Stores corner stores, and/or
Healthy Stores grocery stores
o Evaluate and improve nutrition education curriculum by:
 Conducting program tracking and evaluation, supplying data to university partners
 Identifying best practices and opportunities for improvement
 Editing the nutrition education curriculum accordingly
o Collaborate with community partners to identify opportunities for nutrition education
 Evaluating the Virtual Supermarket Program
o Coordinating with Neighborhood Food Advocates to inform customers about surveys
o Conduct in-person surveys of customers in accordance with IRB protocol
o Input survey information into database
o Create summary report of information gathered in surveys
 Assisting with implementation of Youth Neighborhood Food Advocates curriculum
 Assisting with implementation of Virtual Supermarket Program
 Assisting with other Baltimarket report writing, evaluation, technical assistance, and other duties
INTERN INFORMATION (What are the skills and qualities you seek in an intern?):
 A long-standing and passionate commitment to the community and the promotion of health equity
 Strong interpersonal skills and comfort working with diverse groups of people
 Demonstrated knowledge of nutrition promotion and food access policies and programs
 Ability to prepare reports and to make proposals and recommendations
 Access to reliable transportation (required)
 Previous nutrition promotion experience preferred

The Baltimarket Program is housed in downtown Baltimore. If you’re coming for an interview, give
yourself plenty of time to look for parking or take the Light Rail. If selected for an internship, staff can
recommend parking.
This position may require night and weekend work, based on intern availability.
