ESSAY QUESTIONS FOR UNIT 4
Answer any ONE of the following questions. Be prepared to provide a one-page
discussion for your answer. Your essay question is worth 10 pts. on your Unit 4
Exam grade.
1.
Examine the issues involved in American involvement in Vietnam. What was
our purpose in going there? Under whose administration did we initiate
involvement? What did we fail to understand about Vietnam and its
political, economic, and cultural background that contributed to our dismal
failure in that war? More importantly, what lessons have we learned as a
nation from that experience that we can apply to the future?

Evaluate the impact of the constitutional crisis over the Watergate incident.
What were some of the short-term and long-term effects on the
government, the nation?
3.
In spite of its totalitarian system, one benefit of the Soviet Union's strong
military and political presence in Europe was to maintain peace in areas of
ethnic and religious instability. Determine what the effect of the end of
Soviet power means to Europe, including Russia itself. Present both positive
and negative possibilities/realities.
4.
Discuss the “state of the union” at the end of the century. What progress
has been made for the American people from the perspective of democratic
government and how it has served its citizenry. Include the status of
minorities in this country, legislation that benefits segments of society, etc.
