Clear and simple titles and
understandable content
Action/solution oriented – WIIFM,
results/financial impacts. use of metrics
Real conversation rather than talking
heads or PowerPoint presentations
Uses terms relevant to business (words
like “divisions, business units, employees,
directors”, etc.)
If PowerPoint, light on text, no
scripted talk, no bullet points,
minimal but pertinent info
Good storytelling (“Think TED talks”)
Ability to connect with the audience,
uses active listening
Sequence: find a problem, apply theory,
show relation of theory to that problem,
alternative theory that might also apply,
possible solutions, how to implement
solution(s), next steps
Practical content usable in a
business context, concrete
examples, ROI relevant
The language of leadership = the
language of business: authentic,
consistent, transparent, visionary,
courageous, inclusive common sense
with humor, humility, content in
perspective
Bridging research and practice
Entertaining, upbeat, charismatic
Have an extra dinner/lunch for business leaders where they can go
deep into biz leadership.
Focus on leadership issues within businesses rather than focus on
“business leaders” which assumes a positional construct.
Seems to be a tension between academic and business focus for the
ILA – maybe doesn’t need to be “or” but to further the science and
understanding of leadership. And this would be a rich topic for a
panel discussion/keynote.
Goals for 2014-15

issues for them
 Produce outstanding presentations for 2014 conference
