COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Subject matter will vary within the department’s field of study. (Catalog Description)
In this course, students will explore the diversity of Italy, France', and England’s geography,
culture, food and fashion. We will study the language and landscapes of these countries that
have inspired designers, culinary artist, writers and artists. We will experience Florence,
Italy, and then will travel to Paris for a week of immersion in metropolitan splendor., after
which we will conclude spending 2 days in London, Engand. Students will prepare reports
in advance, keep journals, and write an extensive response paper based on course themes.

provided at first pre-trip meeting)
It is advised that you read in advance of departure! You will want to re-read certain
passages during the tour.

REQUIRED SUPPLIES:
Students will need a physical notebook and writing implements so that they may take
notes at all times and journal regularly. You will also need a camera (your phone is not
sufficient) to document aspects of the trip for your final report.
In addition, because we will be on our feet most of the day, appropriate footwear –
broken-in, closed-toe shoes, are essential for this study tour.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Writing
*Students will keep a journal of daily activities. Some journal topics will be assigned.
*Students will each prepare a brief writing assignment on a particular geographic area or
site of interest that we will visit during the tour.
*Students will submit an enhanced journal project at the conclusion of the tour.
Reading
*Students will read materials provided in advance regarding the journaling process, the
best practices regarding international travel, important names and places of interest to our
travels.
Speaking
*Students will make presentations in French and/or English prior to departure and during
the trip.
*Students will present their brief writing assignment in the form of an oral presentation
prior to the group’s visit to the region or site of interest in question.
TRANSFORMATIVE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
This course addresses 5 (five) of the “Central Six” learning objectives. Global
Competency will come in the form of direct encounter with and further reflection on a
variety of cultures native to Italy and France; students will learn about Leadership by
designing and implementing their own day in Paris; Discipline Knowledge will be
enhanced through pre-departure reading as well as on-site experiences; student reports
and the post-tour research paper will require Scholarly and Creative Activity; and
Wellness will be addressed through comparisons of French, Italian, British, and American
approaches to activity and diet, as well as the enormous amount of walking the course
demands.
GRADING:
Grades will be based on the following components
1) Pre-departure preparation and quizzes = 10%
2) On-site report and brochure = 20%
3) Journal (will be read 2 times during trip) = 20% The journal will include
responses to assigned prompts as well as free writing and the development of a
vocabulary list with words that you acquire each day.
4) Final report = 40%
5) Active participation in tour = 10% -- includes prompt arrivals at assigned meeting
places, sharing a positive attitude with classmates and instructore, and asking
questions

GRADE CALCULATION:
90-100% = A
80-89% = B
70-79% = C
60-69% = D
59% and below = F
CLASS MANAGEMENT
Students must comply with University and instructor expectations for deportment,
including appropriate dress, tone and volume of voice, and activity. We will spend predeparture time on wardrobe, including appropriate footwear.
Students may not withdraw from the course once travel has begun and will be held
accountable for financial obligations.
Initial deposit is non-refundable.
Students whose behavior does not comply with University regulations or instructor
expectations may be required to separate from the tour and return early, at their expense.

SUBJECT TO SANCTION.

FINANCIAL ISSUES/PAYMENT SCHEDULE
1) $500 deposit is required by November 30, 2014 to secure a place in the course
2) Additional $1900 to cover airfare is due by February 15, 2015
3) Additional $1000 is due by April 1, 2015
4) Balance ($550) due by May 1, 2015; students receiving financial aid and/or college
scholarships will work with the instructor to develop their payment plans.
Total price of 3950.00 includes all airfare and ground transportation, lodging, breakfast
every day, 5 other meals, and admission to required activities.

Tuesday
26 March
Cultural Immersion
Lesson on French and Italian culture, with emphasis on etiquette, dining,
making purchases, using public transportation, and money exchange.
Readings will be distributed.
Tuesday
9 April
Traveling in France, Italy, and the UK/Grab Bag
2 hours devoted to Paris, London, and Florence details (they will be
deciding what they want to see at the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay,
Versailles and on their “free” afternoon). We will cover lessons in
traveling, including information on packing, money, documents, and using
public transportation.

Presentations
Students will present their pre-departure findings on their site of interest
and review historical figures and events.
In addition to the pre-departure meetings listed above, we will schedule a viewing and
discussion of two films for their geographical, cultural, and stunning costume design
material: Paris, Je t’aime and Coco Before Chanel by Anne Fontaine

Florence Day 1: Upon arrival and check-in
at the hotel take an evening stroll through
the streets of the quaint city of Florence and

enjoy a delicious wood-fired Italian Pizza
dinner.
Wednesday, May 20, 2015
Florence Day 2: Visit the city to include
the Duomo and the famous Ponte Vecchio.
Tour Botegga Floretina (leather school).
Mid-afternoon snack of delicious Italian
Gellato. Optional Afternoon visit to the
Academmia for the statue of David. Dinner
on your own. 9 hours of class time.

Florence Day 3: Spend the morning at the
Salvatore Ferragamo flagship store and shoe
museum (guided tour). Afternoon tour of the
Gucci Factory and Museum followed by free
time to explore the city and possibly visit the
Uffizi Art Museum.

Day 4: *Fly to Paris – After getting settled
in the hotel, we will have dinner and take a
cruise on the Seine to get an overview of the
city. Dinner included. Return to hotel
around 10 pm. 9 hours class time.

Paris Day 5 - We will visit Sainte Chapelle,
Notre Dame, Ile Saint Louis, and other
nearby sights in the morning. Then we will
cross the Seine and spend the afternoon in
the Latin Quarter, where we will visit La
Sorbonne, the Panthéon and the Boulevard
St. Germain, Luxembourg Gardens and
Montparnasse. Time to sample some
macarons!

Paris Day 6 - Morning visit to the Musée
d’Orsay. Afternoon in the Marais.. Visit to
the Furrier. Dinner on your own, followed
by optional night-time visit to the Eiffel
Tower. 9 hours class time.

Paris Day 7 - Morning in Galéries
Layfayette (tour & meet with a personal
shopper); afternoon on the Champs-Elysées
and Fashion Walking tour. Dinner is

Paris Day 8 - The Palace of Versailles in the
morning for a half-day visit to the gardens
and palace, including the Trianon and Marie
Antoinette’s “hamlet” on the grounds.
Later, we will spend the evening in the
