Dear Colleagues,
we cordially invite you to participate in a Symposium on "MICROALGAE AND SEAWEED
PRODUCTS IN PLANT/SOIL-SYSTEMS" to be held in Mosonmagyaróvár. The Hungarian and
German organisers want to initiate a discussion among scientists from different countries coming
from Eastern and Western Europe as well as from other continents in the field of potential and
practical use of algae for plant and/or soil treatment.
The organisers intend assembling:
1. scientists who have been investigating microalgae and seaweed which can be used for plant or
soil treatment because of their soil conditioning, plant growth regulating, antimicrobial or any other
beneficial activities;

2. plant producers, who have experience in plant/soil treatment with microalgal or seaweed
products;
3. chief scientists or managers of companies, who are marketing microalgal or seaweed products.
Presentations about cyanobacteria, microalgae and seaweed, which are or can potentially be used in
plant production, and their influence on plant/soil-systems are especially welcome.
Please attend, present your results and new findings, become acquainted with our experience in the
field of freshwater cyanobacteria and microalgae for agricultural purposes, and discuss new
methods which may contribute to the environmentally friendly plant production.

General Information
The Symposium will be held at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences in Mosonmagyaróvár from
Wednesday 20th to Friday 22nd June 2001. All participants are expected to arrive by Wednesday
evening. Post-symposium excursions to Budapest (Saturday 23rd) and to Lake Balaton (Sunday 24th)
will complete the scientific programme.

Oral and poster presentations given by participants would be highly appreciated. The one page long
abstracts of papers and posters will be published in the Book of Abstracts.

file attachment. The abstracts must be prepared using WinWord v2 or v6 form (IBM PC or
compatible). The deadline for the registration and receipt of abstracts is 31 March 2001.

Rakowska, B., Diatoms occurring in a peat post-excavation pit, Central Poland. Biologia,

The studied reservoir resulted from peat exploitation and its plant cover continually expands. Its specific diatom flora
resulted from acid water and considerable isolation. A total of 161 diatom taxa were identified. In the classification of
water-pH-related occurrence (Van Dam et al., 1994) they were divided into acidobionts (occurring at pH < 5.5), Eunotia
exigua, E. paludosa, Frustulia rhomboides var. crassinervia, Navicula festiva, Pinnularia braunii, Tabellaria
quadriseptata, and acidophils (occurring at pH <5.5 and <7.0), Anomoeoneis brachysira, A. styriaca, Cyclotella
antiqua, Cymbella gracilis, C. hebridica, Eunotia arculus, E. implicata, E. incisa, E. intermedia, E. minor, E. monodon
var. bidens, E. praeupta, E. serra var. tetraedron, Frustulia rhomboides, Navicula hambergii, N. subtilissima, Neidium
affine var. longiceps, Pinnularia acoricola, P. appendiculata, P. divergentissima, P. gibba var. linearis, P. nodosa, P.
subcapitata, Stauroneis anceps f. gracilis, Tabellaria flocculosa. On the basis of taxa that are dominant, subdominant or
characteristic for the reservoir its water may be determined as oligotrophic-dystrophic, scarce in electrolytes, of pH
ranging from 5.3 to 6.7.

The results of phytoplankton species diversity studies of the Albanian part of Lake Shkodra in 1998-1999 are presented.
Lake Shkodra is the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula situated transboundary between the Yugoslavian Federal
Republic (Montenegro) and Albania. It is a large, but shallow lake of an oligotrophic character. In material collected
from 9 sampling stations altogether 142 genera with 455 species and infraspecific taxa were determined; majority of
them (255) have not been recorded in the Montenegro part of Lake Shkodra by Petkovia (1981). The highest number of
species and infraspecific taxa were found in Bacillariophyceae (242) and Chlorophyceae (97), followed by
Conjugatophyceae (35), Euglenophyceae (35) and Cyanophyceae (24); other groups were represented only by some
taxa. In spite of a relatively rich phototrophic microflora, Lake Shkodra according to the phytoplankton species
composition can be classified oligotrophic.
Diatoms dominated in most samples, with Cyclotella ocellata, C. distinguenda, Asterionella formosa, Fragilaria ulna,
Aulacoseira ambigua, Cymbella affinis, Gomphonema acuminatum, Navicula capitatoradiata. From other algal groups
belonged to the characteristic species of Lake Shkodra phytoplankton: Ceratium hirundinella from Dinophyta,
Dinobryon sociale and D. divergens from Chrysophyceae, Merismopedia glauca, Microcystis aeruginosa and
Radiocystis aphanothecoidea from Cyanophyta, Pediastrum simplex, P. duplex var. gracillimum, Coelastrum
polychordum and Scenedesmus perforatus from Chlorophyceae.

Caput, K. & Plenkovia-Moraj, A., Epiphytic diatoms on sawgrass (Cladium mariscus) in the
karstic Plitvice Lakes, Croatia. Biologia, Bratislava, 55: 343-350, 2000; ISSN 0006-3088.
The aquatic macrophyte vegetation of sawgrass (Cladium mariscus Pohl.) was found to be suitable substrate for
colonisation of epiphytic diatoms in Plitvice Lakes (Croatia). Taxonomic composition, frequency of appearance,
abundance, floral similarity and saprobity index of diatoms on live and dead stalks of Cladium mariscus, were
determined. Total number of species 137, have been determined in the epiphytic community. 96 species were found on
live, 111 on dead stalks, while 51% of total number were common species. The dominant community was CymbellaAchnanthes-Gomphonema-Fragilaria-Navicula. High coefficient of floral similarity between live and dead stalks was
calculated. The low index of saprobity indirectly indicated low content of dissolved organic matter and stability of the
ecosystem.

Danilov, R. A. & Ekelund, N. G. A., Effects of autumnal stratification on phytoplankton
communities in Lake Solumsjö, Sweden: Application of diversity indices and multivariate
methods. Biologia, Bratislava, 55: 357-362, 2000; ISSN 0006 3088.
Effects of autumnal stratification on phytoplankton communities at different depths were studied in Lake Solumsjö, NE
Sweden. Species number, Shannon-Weaver’s, Margalef’s and Menhinick’s indices as well as cluster analyses using
presence-absence with abundance matrices were applied. All diversity indices used clearly indicated higher diversity in
epilimnion compared to that in hypolimnion. This pattern can be explained by sole dominance of Trachelomonas
volvocinopsis under predominantly anoxic conditions and high concentrations of iron and manganese below the thermal
gradient. Stratification disappeared between September 29 and October 4, thus leading to homogenisation of water
column and similar phytoplankton communities at all depths. Cluster analyses using presence-absence with abundance
matrices turned out to be a powerful tool when studying temporal changes in phytoplankton communities as a result of
stratification patterns. Two distinct clusters at depths of 0, 2 and 10 m were clearly separated: one containing algal
communities during stratification and one containing algal communities after the thermal gradient disappeared. At the
depth of 5 m more homogeny between phytoplankton communities under stratified and mixed conditions was observed.

Pišút, I. & Lisická, E., Epiphytes on permanent plot in the vicinity of Bratislava (SW
Slovakia). Biologia, Bratislava, 55: 369-373, 2000; ISSN 0006–3088.
In Bratislava, an important industrial centre, air pollution has significantly increased since 1960. A grove, called
Panónsky háj, situated 12 km NE from the city centre and on the border of the air pollution field, was chosen to study
epiphytes on permanent plots. The investigations started in 1973, a trunk of Quercus robur was examined. A collapsible
wire net of 312 quadrates was used, covering 54,750 cm2. Observations were carried out until 1989. Steady
deterioration of the epiphytes was registered, with a decrease of number of species at individual quadrates and an
increase of number of quadrates with only one species present. Nevertheless, symptoms of certain restoration in the last
years were noted, due to the decrease of air pollutants concentration. Parmelia tiliacea disappeared totally, Parmelia
glabratula and Evernia prunastri distinctly decreased too. Pertusaria albescens showed no changes in its frequency.
That of Parmelia sulcata (represented only by young thalli) slightly increased. The same was true about Pleurococcus
vulgaris, whereas the frequency of Hypnum cupressiforme increased significantly. During the period of 16 years the
plot was not permanently colonised by any new species.

Danilov, R. A. & Ekelund, N. G. A., Effects of copper on growth rate, cell shape, motility and
photosynthesis in the green flagellate Euglena gracilis in a long-term experiment. Biologia,
Bratislava, 55: 413-418, 2000; ISSN 0006-3088.
The green flagellate Euglena gracilis was treated for seven days with concentrations of copper ranging from 0.02 mg L 1
to 2.0 mg L-1. No inhibiting effects were detected in any physiological parameters measured. In general, it seems that

enhanced copper concentrations stimulated photosynthetic efficiency (PE) of E. gracilis. Concentrations of copper
reported to be critical for the other algae studied (from 0.10 mg L-1 to 0.14 mg L-1) did not show any severe negative
effects on E. gracilis. An unusual trend was observed where an increase in PE was followed by an increase in light
irradiance necessary to achieve light compensation point. High capacity of E. gracilis to adapt to copper stress is being
discussed as a possible explanation for the trends detected.

Hindák, F., A contribution to the taxonomy of the nostocalean genus Richelia
(Cyanophyta/Cyanobacteria). Biologia, Bratislava, 55: 1-6, 2000; ISSN 0006-3088.
The procaryotic nostocalean genus Richelia Johs. Schmidt 1901 (Cyanophyta/Cyanpbacteria) is characteristic by short
trichomes with terminal heterocytes and by the absence of akinetes. The only described species, R. intracelularisI Johs.
Schmidt 1901, occurs in warm oceans symbiotically in the frustules of diatoms Rhizosolenia or Hemiaulus, or
epiphytically on Chaetoceros, In this article the second species of the genus, originally described from rice flieds in SE
Asia as Anabaena siamensis, is transferred into the genus Richelia. The species is also characterized by short trichomes
and spherical to oval or conical terminal heterocystes, and the absence of akinetes. Pro-heterocytes in R.siamensis are
formed intercalary from one vegetative cell which divides into two daughter cells. The parental trichomes is broken into
two daughter trichomes just at the connection of pro-heterocytes. Pro-heterocytes at the ends of trichomes are fully
developed into heterocytes later. It is this character that separates R. siamensis from the representatives of the genus
Anabaenoposis (Woloszynska) Miller, in which pro-heterocytes are formed from two neghbouring cells and ripen
directly in the parental trichomes. Specimens similar to Anabaena sinensis have been observed in littoral of lakes, small
channels and pools in Slovakia. The position of the genus Richelia in the Nostocaceae family is discussed.

Hindák, F. & Hindáková, A., Checklist of the cyanophytes/cyanobacteria and algae of the
Slovak stretch of the Danube river (1926-1999). Biologia, Bratislava, 55: 7-34, 2000; ISSN

The checklist contains all records of cyanophytes(cyanobacteria and algae from the Slovak stretch of the Danube river
validly published during the years of 1926-1999. Alltogether 282 genera with 1050 species and infraspecific taxa have
been found in the Slovak part of the Danube. This enumeration proceeds the first checklist of the Slovak Danube
cyanophytes and algae (Hindák & Záhumenský, 1983) in which 590 infrageneric taxa belonging to 191 genera were
registered. During the period of 1981-1994 most taxa were confirmed again (123 genera with 273 infraspecific taxa),
but 27 genera with 145 species, 17 varieties and 2 formas were recorded for the first time from this part of Danube
(Hindák, 1995).

Prasad, K. V. R., Ghosh, M. & Gaur, J. P., A reconnaissance of species-environment
relationships in pond phytoplankton at Varanasi (India). Biologia, Bratislava, 55: 35-42, 2000;

A survey of summer phytoplankton assemblages of 15 ponds at Varanasi (India) revealed the significance of pH and the
nutrient ratios for the structure of the assemblage. Definite relationships between various nutrient ratios and distribution
of phytoplankton groups emerged out of this study. The cyanophytes mainly dominated ponds with a high pH and an
inorganic N:P ratio less than 11:1 suggesting their being superior N competitors, whereas low pH and high N:P ratio
generally favoured the chlorophytes and diatoms. Euglenophyte abundance was associated with high levels of ammonia
and organic matter. Despite the high Si:P ratio in the study ponds, diatoms seldom assumed dominance except for some
macrophyte-covered ponds due probably to nitrogen limitation. The macrophyte-covered ponds had low algal biomass
and were dominated by green algae and diatoms. Canonical correspondence analysis clearly elucidated the preference
of cyanophytes to high pH and low nitrate-nitrogen and chlorpohytes to high phosphate, nitrate and low pH. The broad
range of N:P ratio in the study ponds indicates both N and P limitation with different species becoming dominant at
different ratios. The most commonly occurring species were Microcystis aeruginosa and Chlorella vulgaris, with the
former attaining maximal biomass in a pond with N:P ratio of 9:1. The latter species, however, occurred over a wider
range of N:P ratio.

Díaz Villanueva, V. & Maidana, N. I., Diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) from Pulmarí lake

This study analyses diatom diversity and relative abundance in Pulmarí lake (39° 07' S; 71° 05' W), in the Patagonian
Andes Neuquén (Argentina). 147 diatom taxa were identified, 24 infrageneric taxa are new records for Argentina and a
new variaty Navicula willeri Krasske var. Triundulata is described.

Fajtová, K. & Marvan, P., On the cell morphology and biology of Characiochloris apiculata

Characiochloris apiculata Korshikov, an epiphytic green alga described from the norther Russia, was recognised in the
Doevnice river, a left tributary of the Morava river (South Moravia, Czech Republic) following strong summer floods.
The species grew well for several months in laboratory subcultures of the host alga, Oedogonium sp. Its cell cycle starts
with a very short monadoid stage (several tens of seconds) with a rather poorly developed chloroplast, a minute, hardly
perceivable stigma and a few contractile vacuoles, which soon stop functioning in the substrate-attached cells. Neither
in the monadoid stage nor in the early phases of the sessile stage the presence of a cell wall could be confirmed.
Observations of the life cycle seem to support the intermediate position of C. apiculata between Characiochloris and
Characium, as proposed by Fott (1972).

Ghosh, M. & Gaur, J. P., Temporal changes in periphytic biomass in two unshaded Indian
streams. Biologia, Bratislava, 54: 17-24, 1999; ISSN 0006-3088.
Monthly changes in biomass (chlorophyll a) of stream periphyton were studied in relation to physico-chemical
characteristics of water for a period of two years. Streams were mildly acidic (pH< 7.2) and deficient in phosphorus (TP
1-80 mgL-1). Nutrient concentration generally increased during the periods of high flow rate. Periphytic biomass was
generally low (1 to 39.6 mg chlorphyll a m-2) with the maxima observed during winter. Filamentous forms contributed
to periphytic biomass maxima during winter. Scouring hampered algal accrual during the rainy season due to high flow
rate. Periphytic biomass showed significant negative relationship with water current and concentration of phosphate.
Water current was the most important determinant for temporal changes in periphytic biomass.

The surface of the carapace of the planktic crustacean Daphnis magna sampled from a fertilized fishpond in W Slovakia
was densely covered by a green alga. This green alga formed a simple prostrate 2-4-celled uniseriate or 5-8-celled
biseriate single filaments as seen in the ulotrichacean genere Protoderma or Pseudendoclonium. Under laboratory
conditions these short filaments radiating from a centre, and these finally giving rise to long ramified Stigeoclonium-like
filaments. This paper describes and discusses the life cycle and main diagnostic features of the alga and its possible
systematic position.

планктона водотоков системы Средней Волги. I. Виды рода Stephanodiscus Ehr.
Изучены состав и основные элементы экологии массовых видов диатомовых водорослей рода Stephanodiscus
Ehr. в разнотипных по морфометрии и гидрохимическому составу водотоках системы Средней Волги (р. Волга
до создания Чебоксарского водохранилища, Горьковское и Чебоксарское водохранилища, система боковой
приточности этих водоемов). Охарактеризованы закономерности динамики биомассы доминирующих видов
диатомей из рода Stephanodiscus Ehr. в связи с пространственно-временными факторами среды.

Исследовали связь между некоторыми гидрофизическими факторами (температурой, прозрачностью воды,
притоком солнечной радиации, количеством атмосферных осадков) и содержанием хлорофилла а в литорали
Рыбинского водохранилища. Установлено, что максимум продуктивности фитопланктона не совпадал с
максимумом солнечной радиации и наблюдался при ее притоке на поверхность водоема на уровне 20-25
МДж/(м2 o сут). Между температурой воды, содержанием хлорофилла а и его удельной активностью
наблюдалась прямая зависимость. Такая же зависимость была между содержанием хлорофилла и
интенсивностью фотосинтеза фитопланктона, а также концентрацией кислорода в воде. Пересыщение воды
кислородом отмечалось при содержании хлорофилла а > 30 мкг/л. Динамика содержания хлорофилла а
противофазна по отношению к количеству атмосферных осадков и прозрачности воды.

водорослей
в
фитопланктоне
Рыбинского
Изучали содержание мертвых клеток в фитопланктоне Рыбинского водохранилища. Мертвые клетки
определяли с помощью красителя метиленового синего. В фотическом слое глубоководной зоны их доля
оказалась довольно высокой - в среднем 30% от общей численности. Она сильно различается у диатомовых и
зеленых водорослей, соответственно 40% и 6% от численности группы, и меняется с изменением последней в
сезонном аспекте и на разных стадиях роста в ее подъемах. Максимальное содержание наблюдается в период
массовой вегетации группы (весна или лето) и в пиках численности, а минимальное - осенью и в периоды
интенсивного нарастания. Высокое, доходящее иногда до 100%, содержание мертвых клеток в верхнем слое
воды характерно для диатомей Asterionella formosa, Diatoma tenuis, Fragilaria crotonensis, Sceletonema subsalsum.
Э.С. Бикбулатов. Цикличность в процессах биохимической трансформации природных
органических веществ в статических условиях.
Исследовано поведение хлореллы (Chlorella pyrenoidosa Сhick.), культивируемой на природных водах из
различных источников, при многократном долгопериодном (15 cут и более) варьировании освещенности. Фаза
длительного естественного чередования светлого и темного времени суток, благоприятствующая размножению
клеток, принималась за нормальный "световой" режим, а следующая за ней многодневная фаза полного
отсутствия света, способствующая процессам деструкции клеточного материала, считалась "темновой". За
ходом процессов следили по изменению содержания основных форм питательных элементов - азота и фосфора,
а также по росту и гибели популяции водорослей. Обнаружено, что в условиях статической культуры подобные
периодические изменения в степени освещенности приводят только к кратковременным проявлениям
цикличности (выдерживается два цикла) в процессах продукции и деструкции органических веществ.

мутагенных свойств сточных вод основных промышленных предприятий г. Рыбинска
(Ярославская обл.).
Установлено присутствие веществ, способных оказывать токсическое и мутагенное воздействие на тестобъекты, в сточных водах основных промышленных предприятий г. Рыбинска. Наличие таких веществ в
сточных водах - источник постоянного загрязнения р. Волги и Рыбинского водохранилища в зоне, где они
используются для питьевых, бытовых и рыбохозяйственных целей. В качестве тест-объектов использовали
Ceriodaphnia affinis, Scenedesmus quadricauda, Salmonella typhimurium, Chlorella vulgaris и Allium cepa.

Изучались структура и продуктивность растительных сообществ зарастающего оз. Большое Раковое
(Карельский перешеек). Макрофитами занято 60% водной поверхности. Их продукция составила 106 г С/м2
(58% общей первичной продукции). Продукция обрастаний макрофитов равнялась 34 г С/м2. Максимальная
биомасса фитопланктона составила 4-5 мг/л. По величине суммарной первичной продукции (182,8 г С/м2 ) оз.
Большое Раковое, как и многие макрофитные озера, можно считать эвтрофным, несмотря на слабое развитие
фитопланктона.

водохранилищ.
На основе электронно-микроскопического изучения волжских материалов приводятся краткие описания и
оригинальные микрофотографии 15 таксонов диатомовых водорослей, новых для флоры России, и 5 - новых
для р. Волги.

Суточную динамику деления клеток планктонной диатомеи Asterionella formosa Hass. в естественной
популяции изучали в самый длинный фотопериод, к которому приурочен главный пик численности в сезонном
развитии этой водоросли, по частоте встречаемости парных клеток. Установлено, что деление клеток
периодично. Наиболее активно оно происходит в светлое время суток, особенно в первые послеполуденные
часы - 27% делящихся клеток.

гетеротрофного бактериопланктона в прибрежных водах Рыбинского водохранилища.
Изучали сезонную динамику автотрофного пикопланктона и гетеротрофного бактериопланктона на
прибрежной станции Волжского плеса Рыбинского водохранилища. Численность пикоавтотрофов колебалась в
пределах 4,6-1504,1 тыс. кл./мл. Максимальные значения были отмечены во второй половине июля. Общая
численность бактериопланктона варьировала от 4821,5 до 17925,5 тыс. кл./мл. Максимальные значения
наблюдались в конце августа - начале сентября.
