Recreation in Canada
Canada's national sports are hockey, and lacrosse but curling and baseball are also
popular. Canada is famous for their hockey team, Team Canada. Team Canada wins a lot of gold
medals in the Olympics. Whenever the Montreal Canadians win the Stanley Cup, there are riots
in the streets. Canada has many hockey teams including, The Toronto Maple Leafs, The
Montreal Canadians, The Edmonton Oilers, The Vancouver Canucks, The Ottawa Senators, and
The Calgary Flames.
Canada is also famous for their lacrosse, which is their main national sport. Canada has
their own football league that consists of 8 teams including, The Calgary Stampeders, The
Edmonton Eskimos, The BC Lions, The Saskatchewan Roughriders, The Winnipeg Blue
Bombers, The Hamilton Tiger Cats, The Montreal Aliouttes, and The Toronto Argonauts. Some
of the differences between American football and Canadian football are that the Canadian
football size is bigger than the American ball, the end zone is deeper , the field goal posts are in
the front of the end zone instead of the back, and there are 12 players on the Canadian team
instead of 11 on the American team.
Curling is another popular sport in Canada. Curling consists of 3 people, one person
pushing the “rock” and 2 people sweeping the ice in front of the “rock” to control the direction.
The purpose of curling is to get the most rocks closest to the center circle. Curling is a
combination of bowling and pool.
Canada also has two major league baseball teams, the Toronto Blue Jays, and the
Montreal Expos. The Blue Jays won the World Series two years in a row, in 1992 and 1993 (Way
1).
