Associate Director of Gift and Estate Planning Institutional Advancement Summary Reporting to the Director of Gift and Estate Planning, this officer will be part of the team to expand and administer a comprehensive planned giving program that includes complex outright gifts and all forms of deferred giving including estate planning, bequests, charitable trusts, and gift annuities. This officer will also be responsible for managing a major, planned and campaign gift prospect portfolio, generating and closing planned gifts and assisting other College personnel with planned gift proposals. In addition, the position will assist in the management of the College’s legacy Society. This position will require a Bachelor’s degree and at least 5-8 years of experience in the gift planning field or in a related area. Familiarity with a variety of the field’s concepts, practices, and procedures is necessary. Position will require some background with financial and investment instruments, mature judgment, and ability to act independently to plan and accomplish goals. Campaign experience is a plus. Face-to-face visits with prospects and travel are required. Essential Functions Will solicit and close planned gifts in excess of $100,000, individually and in collaboration with other development personnel. Will work directly with donors and their advisors, as well as with other development personnel, to develop and implement gift strategies that maximize current and deferred gift potential. Will assist major gifts officers and key college personnel with cultivation/solicitation strategies, as well as with solicitation techniques, proposal/fund agreement preparation, negotiation, and closure of such gifts. Will manage a portfolio of 125- 150 existing major and planned gift prospects, as well as those prospects that may be transferred into the portfolio as a result of the complexity of a gift or pending solicitation. Will complete 12-15 monthly face-to-face visits with donors, prospective donors, and/or their philanthropic advisers. Will actively work through suspect lists and potential prospect pools to identify and qualify new donors and develop the pipeline of prospective donors. Will aid in the oversight and management of administrative aspects of complex current and planned gifts, including, but not limited to: (a) Reporting and stewardship support to life income beneficiaries; (b) Interface with the College’s custodian trust manager; (c) Acceptance and administration of estate assets; (d) Develop and maintain detailed planned giving prospect information on donor database; € Reporting of gift planning productivity (e.g., proposals submitted, dollars raised, new deferred gifts identified; (f) Assist in proper documentation all planned gift acceptances and closures; and (g) Provide staff support for prospect and donor events. Partners with development staff to provide and assist in the creation and interpretation of fund agreements, policies, and other matters associated with deferred giving. Develops stewardship plans with development staff to steward prospects and planned giving donors. Confers with legal counsel regarding legal issues associated with certain gifts and pledges. Works with Finance and Administration offices regarding issues associated with certain gifts, investments, and reports. Other duties as assigned Knowledge/Experience Requirements ~ Core Skills Record of achievement in the cultivation, closing, administration and stewarding of current and deferred gifts. Knowledge of planned giving techniques and an ability to develop a comprehensive and accurate planned gift proposal. Ability to recognize and resolve specific issues that may arise in the area of deferred giving. Ability to work with financial advisors in developing appropriate philanthropic plans which best fit donor’s financial and philanthropic goals. Functional knowledge of the law of nonprofit organizations, and general estate, gift and income tax law. Ability to draft sophisticated fund agreements. Legal training and/or awareness of when to seek legal advice. Ability to work collaboratively with other personnel. Ability to comfortably speak with donors regarding investment concepts and investment of deferred gifts. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in fast-paced, demanding, every-changing and complex environment. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written skills and the corresponding analytical skills needed to establish strategic fundraising goals and report on results. Ability to travel. Ability to handle confidential information with utmost discretion. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree required; advance degree preferred. A Juris Doctor degree is beneficial. Specific training related to planned giving is preferable (this may include a certification in planned giving, CFP, trust & estate law and accounting, CFRE).
