Ancient Greek and Latin Roots
What do we mean by “Ancient Greek and
Latin”?
Greek refers to the language of Greece, and
Latin is the language used by the ancient
(very old) Romans.
What is a root?
A root is a piece of an ancient word that we
find in the English language today.

What is a derivative?
A derivative is a word that has a Greek or
Latin root inside of it. If you know what the
root means, you may be able to figure out
the meaning of the derivative.
Example: “min” means small.
“diminish” means to make smaller.

Practice

depth).
