• An individual who has a primary night

• A public or private place not designed for, or

Current National Efforts
HMIS - Homeless Management Information
System
• Started in 1998 as a directive from the Department of
Housing and Urban Development
• It was decided to use aggregated data rather then a
national database

• HIMS was created as a local HMIS
• The software was too expensive for groups to
purchase ($500-600)
• Nonprofit groups did not have access to a network
infrastructure for information and communication
purposes
• HIMS is now open source with a GNU General Public
License

an individual can receive assistance
