Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will:
Teaching Strategies
Students will participate in simulation, using the Human Patient Simulators in the simulation
laboratory, as a part of this course. Specific times and dates will be scheduled by your faculty.
If necessary, your simulation lab may be scheduled at a time which is different from your
regular clinical schedule. Your flexibility with dates and times for simulation is appreciated
and expected.
Students who wish to tape/record a class (i.e., lecture) must seek the permission of the
instructor before beginning the recording.
Requirements and evaluation methods
The student is required to come prepared as directed by the nursing instructor assigned to
the particular clinical site. Practicum performance will be graded using the clinical
performance evaluation tool. The student is held responsible for satisfactory performance of
all skills and knowledge taught in pre- and co- requisite courses. Assignments to facilitate the
learning experience will be at the discretion of the instructor and student performance on
these will be used when determining the practicum grade. Pre and/or post conferences will
be scheduled, as appropriate, by the faculty.
Unsafe practice jeopardizes the client’s well being. If a student is deemed unsafe in the clinical
setting, he/she may be asked to leave the unit by the instructor. The student must comply and
the day will be counted as an absence. Examples of unsafe behaviors may consist of, but are
not limited to:
1.
Coming unprepared for patient care, i.e., not knowing medications or not
understanding the relationship of pathology to patient care.
2.
Overstepping boundaries, i.e., doing something for which the student is not
prepared to do.
3.
Not in compliance with policies (school or agency).

Professional Behaviors
As professionals, students are expected to demonstrate the following behaviors. Failure to
demonstrate any of these behaviors will result in lowering of the numerical grade for the
course or a failure in the course.

The following Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing grading scale will be
used to compute grades for this course.

According to Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing policy, a grade of “C” is
required in all courses in the nursing major. A student is only allowed to repeat a nursing
course one time and can only repeat a maximum of two courses in order to continue in the
nursing major.
*Class participation is expected of students; however, there is no option for “extra credit” or
“bonus points” to improve grades.
Faculty may deduct points for work which is turned in late.
Students must use APA format for all in-text references and bibliographic citations.
Rounding Policy:
Individual assignments and test grades will be carried out to the second decimal place
throughout the semester. Final course grades will be recorded as a whole number. There will
be no rounding of the final course grade.
Learning Accommodations
Students who are seeking support services from the Baylor University Office of Access and
Learning Accommodation on the basis of diagnosed disability are required to submit
documentation to verify eligibility under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
According to Baylor University's policy, all students seeking accommodations must submit
official letters from the Office of Access and Learning Accommodation to their faculty
members each semester to be eligible to receive accommodations. Contact Tina Glaspie in the
Student Services office if you have questions or need assistance with this process.
Use of Translation Devices
A translating device is an acceptable resource for students to use during clinical preparation.
It is NOT to be used during direct contact with patients or health care team members. Clinical
faculty are responsible for monitoring the appropriate utilization of translating devices.
Attendance
One hundred percent (100%) attendance is expected in all clinicals and seminars. Absences
may result in the decrease of the final grade. No student will receive a passing grade if
attendance is less than 90% for any reason. Baylor University has a mandatory attendance
policy. There are no excused absences in clinical and clinical labs. Absences may not be made
up. Students may not attend clinical or clinical labs to which they are not assigned. LHSON
requires students to attend a minimum of 90% of clinical and clinical lab experiences;
therefore, any student who is not present for at least 90% of the scheduled class/clinical/lab
sessions will automatically receive a grade of “F” in the course.
Math Exam
No references or resources other than the calculators provided by the School of Nursing will
be permitted during exams.
It is a violation of the Honor Code for a student to disclose the contents of any
examination.
For Level 1 (3414)
A passing score on the math exam is mandatory for progression in clinical. Students who are
not successful (i.e. score of 90% or greater) on the first exam will attend individualized
mandatory remediation as scheduled by the faculty member. The second math exam will be
scheduled by the faculty. Students who do not pass the math exam by the second try with a
score of at least 90%, will not be allowed to continue in N3414 and must drop the course.
They will be able to re – enroll at the next course offering, providing there is clinical space.
For Levels 2, 3 and 4:
A passing score on the math exam is mandatory prior to attending clinical. The math exam
will be offered the first day of classes. Any student who is not successful (i.e. score 90% or
higher) on the first math exam must attend one of the two mandatory remediation sessions
which will be offered during the first week of classes. A second math exam will be offered the
first day of class on the second week of classes. Students who do not make at least a 90% on
the second math exam will not be allowed to continue in clinical. They will drop the course
and will be able to re – enroll at the next course offering, providing there is clinical space.
Honor Code
All students’ conduct while attending Baylor University must adhere to the provisions of the
Baylor University Honor Code. Students must be familiar with the Honor Code and actions in
the classroom, lab and clinical site which would result in an Honor Code violation. Honor Code
violations can result in sanctions including failure from the course, probation, suspension, or
expulsion. Any student who violates the Honor Code will be disciplined in accordance with the
