News from the School

Flooding of Wilson Hall
Thanks to everyone who worked to make it possible for classes to continue and life to carry on,
in the face of the extraordinary events of last week. The basement of Wilson hall will take
some weeks to restore and is off limits until further notice.

SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships – McGill Internal Results
The applications of the 5 students the School recommended for SSHRC doctoral fellowships
have been forwarded to SSHRC by McGill for further consideration. The students are: Mireille

De La Sablonniere-Griffin, Patrina Duhaney, Shawn Renee Hordyk, Jennifer Nutton
& Nahid Sultana. SSHRC plans to announce the final results in the spring.

Job Talks Kickoff
The first of a series of job talks will get kick off on Feb. 18, 2013 at 2:00pm with a talk by
Dr. Jim Mandiberg from Columbia University. Dr. Mandiberg’s research is in social
entrepreneurship and social enterprise development among and for economically and socially
excluded populations. More information to follow.

MSW/QY Advisory Group Meeting
The MSW/QY Advisory Group held its first meeting of 2013 on January 16th. Membership is
comprised of the following professors/lecturers: Julia Krane (Chair), Nico Trocmé, Tamara
Sussman,
Karen
Hetherington,
Shawn-Renée
Hordyk;
and
the
following
student
representatives: Alex Beveridge and Bonnie Pero (MSW student representatives) and Marianne
Leaunne-Welt (QY student representative). The purpose of the meeting was to generate a list
of items and set them in order of priority as a way of identifying the work of the MSW/QY
Advisory Group for the Winter term of 2013. The most immediate items included: re-examining
the MSW class schedule which can result in 9 consecutive hours of classes; enhancing the
experience of QY students as “graduate students”, review admissions package, and developing
an alumni exit-survey that tracks employment and that might be helpful for recruitment. The
next meeting of the Advisory Group will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, 2:30 pm –
4 pm in Room 326, Wilson Hall.

BSW Town Hall
The BSW town hall will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm
(room to be determined).

CRCF Research Seminars
The CRCF (Centre for Research on Children & Families) Research Seminars provide an
opportunity for faculty, visiting scholars and graduate students to share and discuss their
research. For the upcoming presentations, please visit CRCF’s website.

Award for Equity & Community Building
McGill’s new Award for Equity & Community Building recognizes the work of students, faculty
and staff committed to advancing equity and diversity at McGill. Up to three awards may be
granted per year. The nomination deadline for the first competition is Friday, March 15,

Grad Photo Details (to All Graduating Students)
Here are the details for the grad photos:

You have to call to book your appointment at 514-499-9999 at HF Photos on 2015
Drummond Street;
o
The combo includes a set of 8 pictures. HF Photos provides different props that students
could use (flowers, diploma and hat);
o
You can also bring a significant object with you or friends to take the picture with you if
you wish;

o
The total cost, including taxes, is $31.04;
o
You can call at any time, there is no deadline to book an appointment.
Idle No More Teach-in
Friday, Feb. 8, 2013 at 2pm in Wendy Patrick room, members from Indigenous Student
Alliance and McGill social work community are organizing an event to discuss Idle No More.
There will be a panel, small group discussion and exercises. A light meal will be provided. Space
is limited, so please RSVP to teachinrsvp@gmail.com.

Sweatshirt Sale/Breakfast

SWSA is organizing a Sweatshirt Sale/Breakfast on Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, 10 am – 2 pm

The next SWAGS meeting will be held on Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, 1 pm – 3 pm in Room 326,
Wilson Hall.

Workshop on Oppression
The International & Out of Province Committee of SWAGS and the Racialised Students Network
(RSN) will be collaborating with the Social Equity and Diversity Education (SEDE) Office, McGill
University for a Workshop on Oppression on Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, 1 pm – 5 pm in the
Wendy Patrick Room. To register, please e-mail Ifeyinwa Mbakogu.

SWSA Elections
Ballots will be cast for next year’s SWSA team on the week of March 18th, 2013. If you are

Volunteering for CATHII
The Committee of Action against Human Trafficking National and International (CATHII) is
looking for volunteers for an event on human trafficking « Responding to human trafficking:
towards integrated action! » that will take place on April 11 & 12, 2013. If you volunteer, you

Inuktitut Language Courses
As the Arctic Quebec organization with a mandate to develop the language and culture of the
Inuit of Nunavik, the Avataq Cultural Institute will be offering Inuktitut language courses

Call for Grad Student Submissions: 3 Minutes to Change the World
Submission deadline: Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013
McGill’s Office of Sustainability, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, and the Post-Graduate
Students Society, is hosting Three Minutes to Change the World, a TED-talk style event on
March 21, 2013, 12 – 3 pm featuring McGill graduate students giving three-minute
presentations about their research initiatives and their impact on the community. This is a great
opportunity for students to share their valuable research, to perfect their elevator pitch and
presentation skills, and to network with their peers across disciplines- It takes all kinds of

research and knowledge in your field of expertise on the 3rd Annual Interdisciplinary Symposium

The Optimistic Child Workshop
Based on the book, The Optimistic Child, by Martin P. Seligman, Ph.D., this workshop shows
you how to teach your children the skills of optimism, helping them to achieve more both at
school and in life. Learn about the fundamentals of optimism & pessimism, how to measure
your child's level of optimism, and strategies to boost your child's ability to combat depression
