The following information will outline expectations for all students participating in the piano lab. These policies are necessary both for the growth and for the future improvement of the piano lab. GENERAL INFORMATION Students are expected to follow all class rules: 1. Enter class with a positive attitude ready to learn and practice 2. Listen when the instructor is speaking 3. Listen when other students are sharing information 4. NO GUM, FOOD, OR DRINKS- if you deliberately use these items during class you will be given detention- these items can damage the keyboards 5. Be prepared everyday with all materials pencil, eraser, highlighter, binder 6. Keep hands, feet, objects to self 7. All purses, book bags and cell phones are to be put in an area away from the piano lab/behind the risers 8. Be respectful of others in feelings, in thought, in actions, and in words 9. Raise hand for permission to speak or leave seat 10. Refrain from using profanity or inappropriate gestures 11. No make-up/hair spray/ or brushes to be used in class 12. RESPECT ALL EQUIPMENT- no leaning on, writing on, banging on the keyboards 13. Return all borrowed equipment daily- headphones/headphone adaptors/piano books 14.Follow the guidelines set by the students on why they chose to be in piano and how to be successful in piano class Not following the rules will result in the following consequences: 1. Verbal warning 2. Conference with teacher/parent phone call and detention after/before school or during lunch 3. Office Referral 4. If equipment is broken due to breaking the rules or through mistreatment student may be subject to paying for the replacement of damaged equipment MATERIALS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Piano Lesson Book 1 Older Beginner- Faber Favorite Classic Melodies Level 1- Bastien Headphones quarter inch male adaptor 3 ring binder pencil with eraser highlighter notebook paper paper keyboard (class will provide) manuscript paper (class will provide) *A piano shirt must be purchased. This shirt can be used as part of the school uniform. The piano shirt will be worn for all performances, contests, and field trips. GRADING POLICIES Daily Participation is a major part of the student’s grade as it is listed under Rehearsal Technique in the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills). This Participation grade includes: 1. Practicing in class silently 2. Completing all daily dittos/assignments 3. Asking/Answering questions 4. Having all materials 5. Adhering to all rules If a student fails to participate in class and/or is unprepared with the materials the following consequences will occur: 1. Student will call home and inform parents and a written letter confirming that both parent and student were told will be sent home 2. Student will receive lunch detention 3. Student will receive a referral Students will also receive a grade each nine weeks for writing and performing their own musical composition. Students will complete written and performance quizzes and tests. Students will complete a written and performance based nine weeks exam. RECITALS Students will perform in evening recitals as part of the class curriculum. Students will be informed of recital dates in advance. Recitals are an essential part to student growth and a requirement listed in the TEKS. If students miss a recital they will be required to play the following school day during lunch time, or classes will be pulled in for them to have an audience. FUNDRAISING The piano lab will have fundraising events throughout the year. It is optional for students to participate. However, the more participation the more monies can be earned and put to good use for the music program. Fundraisers are used to fund for: 1. Field trips 2. Awards 3. Music 4. Sound Equipment 5. Technology Equipment 6. Uniforms 7. Instruments 8. And so much more- the list is never ending :) COMPETITIONS Piano lab students will perform a piano solo for SISD Solo Contest in the Spring. This contest will demonstrate the skills each student has mastered. Through hard work students will be successful in the piano lab. We realize that purchasing a keyboard is expensive and most students will not be able to do this. It is for this reason that class time be taken seriously to ensure the maximum practice!!!!
