2012 Dual Degree Program Structure
Please ensure that you read and understand the following important information about your program The Bachelor of
Arts/Bachelor of Education (Middle Years of Schooling) offers an integrated program preparing graduates to teach
in the middle years of schooling (Years 4-10) and gain substantial teaching area knowledge.
It is your responsibility to ensure that you complete all the requirements for each section of this dual program to
graduate with both degrees. The following information is designed to help you plan your enrolment to meet this
goal. Further information can be found in the Official Rules and Course lists under the Program Rules and

However, if you have any concerns about meeting degree requirements, especially the year prior to your
Professional Year, please contact the relevant Faculty for advice. For advice on the BA component of your degree,
including advice on majors and courses, please contact the Faculty of Arts. For advice on the BEd component of
your degree, including information on teaching area requirements, please contact the Faculty of Social and
Behavioural Sciences or the School of Education.
Program Guidelines
The Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Education (MidYsSch) consists of two parts. The Bachelor of Arts component
provides the content knowledge of at least two learning areas in the MYS curriculum. The Bachelor of Education
(MidYsSch) component provides pedagogical content knowledge for the school curriculum areas of English,
Mathematics, Science, Social Science, HPE, Technology and the Arts and the necessary skills, knowledge and
practical experiences required for teaching.
Please note: if you are admitted into this dual program mid-year or obtain credit from previous studies you will need
to ensure that you structure your program so that you are able to enter the final year of Bachelor of Education in
semester one – the final year of the BEd program is a year-long Professional Year commencing in semester 1 only.
Bachelor of Arts Requirements:





#32 in total of Bachelor of Arts Courses, consisting of:
 #16 for a major
 #8 for a minor
 #6 of required courses
 #2 for an approved elective
Majors in the dual degree are limited to Ancient History/History, English, English Language and
Communication, English Literature, Geography, History, Mathematics, Psychology, Sociology, Writing or a
language other than English.
Minors in the dual degree are limited to Ancient History/History, Drama, English, English Language and
Communication, English Literature, Geography, History, Mathematics, Psychology, Sociology, Writing or a
language other than English, Philosophy.
A minimum of #8 of English must be included within the above requirements (i.e. English must form at least a
minor but can alternatively be chosen as a #16 major).

Part A teaches issues pertinent to teaching and schooling and is completed in conjunction with the
requirements of the BA degree

Part B (Professional Year) develops professional expertise required for teaching and can only be commenced
when BA and BEd Part A requirements have been met.
