LaGuardia Community College Internship Learning Objectives of Ricardo Barriga During my internship, I would like to: Goal 1: Increase my skills in managing my time realistically to met internship, school and personal commitments. Action Steps: I will show up on my scheduled time. I will create a “to do” list so that I may list my responsibilities and be aware of them. Create a goals list In order to have successful time management. Goal 2: Increase my knowledge of a specific occupational setting (e.g., hospital, theater, school, business office, art gallery, music company, photography studio). Action Steps: Job shadowing is the best way to obtain hands on knowledge of the position you are looking to obtain. I will shadow a cardio vascular surgeon, if possible, to see what a day in the life of a cardiovascular surgeon is like. Look at the career databases in order to show a list of qualifications and skills needed for that particular position. Goal 3: Increase my knowledge of a specific profession or occupation (e.g., teacher, doctor, social worker, engineer, administrative assistant, fashion designer, scientist) through observation, interaction with co-workers, and/or performing my internship responsibilities. Action Steps: I will use my internship as an opportunity to gain the medical experience that is needed in order to even qualify for medical school. I will also talk to my co-workers to obtain information on the daily requirements and duties. I will talk to doctors and managers in recruiting special tasks and duties outside the required scheme of my position. EXAMPLES OF ACTION STEPS Examine the samples below. Examples of Internship Learning Objectives Goal 1 Increase my communication skills on the telephone. Action Steps: I will be an active observer of two colleagues to learn how they handle difficult customers on the telephone. I will engage in a discussion with two co-workers about effective telephone skills I will ask my boss for feedback and suggestions to improve my telephone techniques at least three times during the internship. I will conduct an Internet search on business telephone techniques and try out two suggestions. Goal 2 Accept positive and negative feedback and learn from experience. I will keep a list of all positive feedback to get an idea of my strengths. I will keep a list of negative feedback and identify ways I could improve my performance the next time I am in the same situation. I will spend fifteen minutes at the end of the day to reflect on my internship experience. I will keep a weekly journal to chart my progress over the course of the internship.
