SSA 101 1805 Prof. Terrence Julien 09/26/06 Viviana Duran The movie that we saw in class teaches us about the way of life that Indians of the eastern woodlands has based on the environment they live in. In order to provide their family with food and clothing they have to kill animals like the deer. The Indians make their own tools and weapons from natural materials. By that time the Indians didn’t have any political system. At that time the Indians made their survival possible because every woman, men or children had their own assigned labor to satisfy all family’s basic needs. The Indians always had a lot of to do and in order to become expert in their skills they had to depend on themselves so when they grow up they will be able to survive. The girls have to know how to make their own clothing using the deer’s skin. On the other hand, boys had to learn how to hunt. Indians learned how to track and kill the deer, and how they fallow certain rituals before, during or after hunting. The Indians children didn’t have any formal schooling; however all what they learned was because everything was told by their families. For a proper hunting the Indian guy had to get wash and walk very slow and carefully before go to hunting and gathering, so the deer can’t recognize the man’s smelling. In addition, the woman also had to use some tools to remove the hair from the outside of the deer. At a boy’s age they have to kill a certain animals like a birth or a rabbit and then bring it to the adult people, when they do so they become man. But, hunting wasn’t enough; therefore they had to ensure a good hug so in that way they could get a proper hunting. Basically their culture was based on their values and beliefs about hunting and gathering. Their food and clothing and even the glue to make their arrows were mostly made after the deer’s hunting. We can concluded how their culture and their believes are based in what they learned, like making their own clothing and how Indians depended on the nature to supply their basic needs.
