Mayumi Oda ENZ099.9910 Professor Havis September 26,2008 Essay #2 Dear Sir; I have heard that California adopted a law making same sex marriage in that state. Gay or lesbian couples sometimes become a discriminated target in society. I believe partners of the same sex should be allowed to marry because the law has succeeded in protecting benefits or rights of the couple. First of all, marriage is a basic human right and an important choice for all people. The same sex couple is not also an exception under the right of marriage. The decision of marriage partners should be regulated between people who love each other, not by government. Therefore, same-sex couples should be allowed to legally marry. For example, a lesbian couple I have watched on television appealed the government to approve making same sex marriage legal for a long time. When the law was enacted in California, they were moved to tears by the news. I felt how strong they wished the establishment of the law. I think nobody cannot take the right away from them. In addition, the law succeeds to give them much financial advantage to marriage itself. The law provides them an opportunity to access to joint insurance policies for home, auto and health and to obtain veterans' discounts on medical care, education, and home loans. It is not sometimes accepted to enter some insurances by a family plan and to discount in some services unless they have relation by marriage. Also, the companies make much of couple’s income because they need to figure out whether the couple have appropriate responsibility to pay for it or not. For instance, a couple that I know once purchased an apartment in California; however, they were refused by some real estate agent after showing their relationship and their each income to them. Therefore, same sex couple can have financial benefit by the approval of the marriage. In conclusion, I think the law has succeeded that the people, such as lesbian or gay couple, have equal right in society. Marriage now offers substantial benefits to people who might otherwise wish to remain single. Sincerely, Mayumi Oda
