Housing Options for Law Students:
To provide our incoming students with the best information about housing, we surveyed our
students on their own housing options, what influenced their choice, and what tips they would
give to you.
Where Our Students Are Living:
Downtown – 36%
Mud Island/Harbor Town – 13%
Midtown – 18%
East Memphis 17%
Suburbs – 12%
Tips from Our Students:
“A benefit of living so close is that rarely do I have to bring work home. This subtly helps to
keep in balance the two worlds with which every law student struggles.”
“Not living Downtown is really not a big deal at all. It only takes me 10-15 minutes to drive that
direction, and the rent is much cheaper. I found a very quiet, relatively small apartment complex
with Madison East and couldn’t be happier. After my lease was up, they did not require me to
sign a new one, so I am only a month-to-month tenant.”
“Try to live close to the law school. Commuting one hour per day takes away one hour of study
time. That may be worth an extra $100/month in the long run.”
“If your family lives here, live at home! No need to waste money (no idea where it would come
from anyway since you can’t have a job!) and time. Plus you don’t have to waste time cooking,
etc. so you can spend that time studying! (If you have nice parents to cook from you…)”
“I live in High Point Terrace and love the neighborhood, plus it’s relatively convenient to all
areas of Memphis. It is family and dog-friendly. It has the Green Line to Shelby Farms, a
delicious pizza place, and a great grocery store with a fantastic butcher. I would recommend this
area especially for married students, students with kids, students that don’t want to live
Downtown, and students who have roommates.”
“Living within walking distance of the school is invaluable. You’re able to pick up your stuff
and go to school, go home, go to the bar, go home from the bar, run home because you forgot
something, run home to let your dog out, etc…People who don’t live Downtown wish they lived
Downtown. Living on Mud Island is not within walking distance. Also, don’t let online reviews
affect your feelings about a certain neighborhoods or building. Ask real people for insight. Ask
other law students.”
“Living Downtown was a good transition to Memphis for the first year when you are going to be
spending a majority of your time at school. For the second year, I have found that living in
Midtown offers you the ability to get more space for your money and be closer to amenities.
Additionally, living in Midtown offers a good balance with short drives to the law school and
main campus.”
“Finding a house in Midtown or East Memphis is an excellent choice. The commute is nice, and
everything is much more convenient than living downtown. It’s better for married students than
non-married.”
“Living Downtown, you are able to walk everywhere including school. I didn’t realize Memphis
downtown was that small or ‘walkable’ before moving here. This makes life so convenient!”
“Mud Island is a great place for students to live. It’s residential and friendly.”
