R SECTION DIETARY MODIFICATIONS Complete only if applicable to your project. YES NO R.1. Will food be withheld for 24 hours or water for 12 hours, or will the diet be deficient or excessive in one or more nutrients? All animals are required to be provided with a regulated diet, under regulated conditions. When there is a deviation, details about the change and how it will affect the animal are required. R.1.a. Food Withheld (does not apply to fasting prior to surgery) R.1.b. Length of time withheld R.1.c. Water Withheld R.1.d. Length of time withheld YES R.2. Dietary Modification (Addition or Deletion of Ingredient) If the animal is on a special diet, explain how the diet will differ from the normal diet. If just one ingredient is added or subtracted, so state. How do you expect this change to affect the animal with regard to weight gain, weight loss, bone absorption, etc.? R.2.a. R.2.b. R.2.c. R.2.d. Ingredient(s) Added Ingredient(s) Deleted How long will the diet be used? Please justify the need for the Dietary Changes and describe the expected effect of the Dietary Changes. Why do you want to make a change in the animals' diet? Once the desired effect occurs, what will be the treatment, if any? R.3. How will the general well-being of the animal be determined? R.3.a. How often will the animal be weighed? Generally, with a change in diet, there is a change in weight. To ensure that the animal is not allowed to change so much that its health is adversely affected, the animal must be weighed often. Please state how often. Depending on the expected result of the diet, the animal should be weighed frequently enough to evaluate its health, but no more than required because of the stress on the animal each time it is weighed. R.3.b. Generally, animals that rapidly gain or lose more than 15% of their body weight (compared to matched controls) should be eliminated from the study (euthanized) or placed back on a normal diet. If this is not acceptable for this project, please address and justify alternatives below. The committee needs to know exactly when you expect to stop the change in the animal's diet. This is generally based on weight gain or loss stated as a percentage of control weight. The greater the change, the greater the explanation and justification required R Section Diet Page 1 of 1 NO
