What is a character trait? A character trait is a special quality or feature that sets one person
apart from another. It is an adjective that describes a person’s personality.
Listed below are some characteristics. Examine how they can be used to describe the characters in the
myths that we read.

CHARACTERIZATION
Characterization refers to how a character is revealed or developed by the author. Usually characters
are described in terms of their `traits`.
A trait is an adjective that describes a character`s personality (not appearance). Ex. honest, fearful,
encouraging, untrustworthy, etc.
Indirect Characterization: the reader draw his/her own conclusions about the character. The
narrator shows the reader the character`s traits by
1. His or her words – character`s dialogue
Ex. “I will help you,” said Clara.
This shows that she is nice or helpful.
2. His or her actions – character’s behavior
Ex. Clara walked through the door and started doing her chores.
This shows that she is responsible.
3. His or her thoughts or feelings - interior monologue
Ex. Clara thought to herself: “I would really like to know him better.”
This shows that she likes the boy.
4. The reactions and opinions of other characters
Ex. “Clara always shared her money with others,” said Frank.
This reveals that she is generous.
Direct Characterization: the narrator tells the reader the character’s traits upfront
5. What the narrator says about the character – description, physical appearance,
details, insight, etc.
Ex. Clara was a short girl with brown hair.
CHARACTERS
Refer to the animals or people that the plot centers around. They participate in the story. There are
specific terms used to refer to different types of characters.
