Art and History Analysis Through the Decades
Assignment:
You will be examining the cultural aspect of one decade of the Twentieth Century. Your task is
to use multiple forms of art to showcase the impact of historical events during that time. Art,
music, literature, dance, fashion, and language all played key roles in shaping specific times in
history. This is your opportunity to highlight which of these forms of art symbolize your
decade the most and why.
Directions:
1.
You may choose to complete this assignment as an individual, with a partner, or in
groups of no more than 3.
2.
Choose one decade from the 20th century to explore and discuss.
3.
Highlight at least 5 different pieces of art from this time period from at least 2 different
genres. (ie. Songs, poems, paintings, clothing style, dance movement, etc.)
4.
Explain why and how these pieces of art showcase historical events from your decade.
5.
Create a Power Point presentation that you will use to explain the connections.
6.
Present your decade to the class in less than 15 minutes.
Grading:
1.
Each member must be a part of the group presentation to the class. Grades will be
based on individual and group assessments as well as teacher input.
2.
Content: Presentation must include specific information about 5 different pieces of art
and explain how each form of art specifically relates to the historical events of the
decade.
3.
Presentation: Power Point should include pictures, videos, music, etc. to highlight the
art forms you are discussing. Slides should not include large amounts of words (the
audience should not be expected to “read” your presentation); however, poor spelling
and grammar will result in a deduction of points.
4.
Presentations should be at least 10 minutes but not last more than 15 minutes.
*
The grade on this presentation will be included in the “test” portion of your overall class
grade.
