SURF X4L SURF X4L PROJECT: UPDATE FROM STAFFS TO AUG 2004 (eddie clarke e.a.clarke@staffs.ac.uk 01785 353548) ‘illustrating further work integrating RELOAD code, developments in ICE (integrating eresources) using JAFER / d+ toolkit, and discussion of ADL SCORM RTE integration’ further work integrating RELOAD code screenshots similar to sept & dec ‘03 update, but uses internal frame for metadata and package viewer – so looks cleaner, but each of these functions require fair chunk of original code. may (want to) include parent application frame with all reload functionality at later date, but pro tem, exploring options with smaller footprint / applet. (seems regional colleges positive about including reload functionality in future version COSE) button added to COSE interface to launch package viewer but work on back-end system structures / architecture for handling packages and importing content components ongoing [does not include latest reload build / code = v1.2 ? may 2004] have made progress with new hierarchical organisation element to be included in future scos [ because scos not rendered properly with package viewer of version 1.2 ] - will be interested to see how / if other LMS / VLEs render according to alternative organisation developments in ICE (integrating COSE and e-resources) have agreed new file formats for web refs .. on-going. [simple web refs without issues relating to brokers / authentication etc we refer to as strand A. strand B is more complicated but encouraged by progress using jafer / discovery plus (see below). still lots of issues re mapping metadata schema / using emerging specs (RLI) but, again, can leverage work @ discovery plus ADL SCORM RTE ‘integration’ (?may be most significant item) as with e-resource broker above, can fire up from COSE (tomcat runs in parallel / need to resolve connectors issue) but .. do we want to do this / what content runs in RTE. system architectural implications? screenshots similar to september ’03 update SCORM v LD merits of so-called SCORM packages. assets and SCOs. also different versions of SCORM v. useful resource - $99 (?) [ Teach Yourself SCORM 1.2 web site boasts 25 000 hits per month ?? seems to be significant difference between US / european / other markets re content ] Page 1 of 3 SURF X4L using JAFER / d+ toolkit as part of the ELF programme, boon low (edinburgh) has built on the jafer (java [kit] for accessing electronic resources) project (developed at oxford) to devise a broker for various OPAC and other z39.50 targets. our library people reckon it might be easy to use on targets at staffs / may just be a matter of switching on / enabling port. runs out of tomcat / uses SOAP / Axis. more work to send more complex queries / search strings but can configure to return (and save) results using your own stylesheet. while architecture / system requirements might not suit a lot of people, this is really useful, and doesn’t take more than a day to set up other developments which might be of interest import of scos to moodle (comment on zip format) coursegenie install problems .. resolved now more packages to test ufi contact has said will provide feedback on use of specs / standards in learndirect content [ Page 2 of 3 SURF X4L zetoc alert on SCORM / netskills workshop sept 15 / oxford RLI meeting / glasgow ec-sig sept 2nd ] other resources / guides identified [am collecting these in ‘best practice’ sketch to feed to cookbook and anyone else interested] bug fixes in scos (cross platform transfers, missing files, background images .. CM 2002 package for NIMLE 1241 component files) use of tomcat / servlet container in jafer/d+ work: facilitating enterprise level functionality / other potential applications and services e.g. u-portal, ADL RTE and SCORM player, poss. IMS Enterprise web services. also z39.50 and axis / SOAP. brighton (july 6/7th ‘04) presentations on-line – for those that may have missed and otherwise - useful resource intrallibrary 2 (?comment on repository) ? interest in xtensis workshop utility of FENC materials – half catalogue is pdf format (?comment on making this accessible) utility of RDN materials – RDN include and RSS services Page 3 of 3
