These battles became famous because they were known as “The shot heard ‘round the world.” Battle of Trenton -This battle took place on December 25. George Washington and his men crossed the Delaware River to make a surprise attack on the British. The British soldiers that were stationed in Trenton were the Hessians (German soldiers that fought for the British). George Washington and his army were successful. This was the FIRST major win for the Patriots. Battle of Yorktown 1781 -This battle is important because it is the last battle of the American Revolution. The Patriots overwhelmed the British troops, and the General of the British army surrendered. The fighting was over. IMPORTANT TOPICS “No Taxation without Representation” The colonists were very angry with King George and Parliament for placing taxes on products. The colonists felt that they should be able to have a voice in the laws and taxes placed upon them in America. New Jersey’s Role in the Revolution New Jersey is often called the Crossroads to the Revolution. It was important for many reasons: L-LOCATION- it was the site of over 100 battles, and it was a perfect spot for the Winter Encampments of 1770 L-LAND- NJ has great flat farm land that was useful for encampments and crops. B-Business- NJ had iron mills that were useful in the production of bullets and canons for the soldiers The War’s Impact on New Jersey Due to the many battles that took place on NJ’s land, much of the land was harmed or destroyed. Also, many farmers had to give up parts of their land for winter encampments. People had to welcome officers into their homes, and often had soldiers harm their properties and steal their crops.
