Job Purpose
To make a leading contribution to the project: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, working with
Prof/Dr. xxxxxxxxxxxxx. Specifically, the job requires expert knowledge in the area/s of
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the
formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals as well as help
manage and direct this project as opportunities allow.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Perform the following activities in conjunction with the Principal/Co Investigator (if project
specifications require PI/CoI terminology to change then amend as appropriate):
1. Take a leading role in the planning and conduct of assigned research objectives
individually and / or jointly with the project team and associated collaborators in accordance
with the project deliverables and School of XXXXXX and College of Arts research strategy.
2. Document research output including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining
records and databases, drafting progress reports and papers as appropriate.
3. Establish and maintain your research profile and reputation and that of the University of
Glasgow / College of Arts and School of XXXXX, including establishing and sustaining a
track record of independent and joint publications (where appropriate) of the highest quality
in high profile/quality refereed journals
4. Enhancing the impact of individual and joint research in terms of economic/societal
benefit, gathering indicators of esteem and identifying opportunities identifying opportunities
for and engaging in knowledge exchange.
4. Survey the research literature and environment, understand the research challenges
associated with the project & subject area, & develop / implement a suitable research
strategy.
5. Present work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars,
colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance the research profile of the subject area /
School / College.
6. Take a leading role in the identification of potential funding sources and to assist in the
development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external (national and
international) bodies to support future research.
7. Take a leading role in developing and maintaining collaborations/partnerships with
colleagues across the project and in the broader School / College / University and wider
national and international community (e.g. academic and business partners).
8. Take a leading role in team / group meetings / seminars / workshops and School research
group activities to enhance the wider knowledge, outputs and culture of the School / College.
9. Where appropriate take the lead in the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of
undergraduate and / or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project
team to ensure their effective development.
10. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the project and School, including
Budgets / Expenditure (delete budgetary element if not appropriate).
11. Where appropriate make some contribution to teaching and assessment activities and
associated admin as assigned by the Head of School and in discussion with Principal
Investigator.
12. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field / discipline.
13. Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and
transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.
14. Undertake any other duties as assigned by the Head of School following discussion with
PI.

tasks which the staff member may be reasonably expected to perform.

Essential:
A1 An awarded PhD in relevant subject area
A2 Extensive specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
A3 A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of current issues and future directions within
the wider subject area and subject specialism
A4 Knowledge of project-specific data sources and archival materials.(this may vary slightly
depending on specific nature of project

Experience

E1 5 years relevant research experience including 1-2 years relevant postdoctoral research
experience in a related field
F2 An emerging national and / or international reputation
E3 Proven track record in delivering quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner
E4 A track record of presentation and publication of research results in high quality journals /
conferences
E5 Experience of making a leading contribution in academic activities
E6 Ability to demonstrate a degree of independence sufficient to be able to take responsibility
for specified project objectives
E7 Experience in undertaking independent and team research
E8 Experience or organising conferences/workshops (move to desirable if not key aspect of
role)
E9. Experience of contributing to successful research funding bids

F1 Experience of leading successful (highly rated) research funding bids.

responsibilities
Prioritise own, and where appropriate delegate to junior team members’, workload
In consultation with PI, decide on research directions and goals within remit of original
project proposal
In consultation with PI adjust research approaches to meet project outcomes
(where appropriate) Identify best journals for publication and meetings/conferences to attend
Internal/External Relationships
University colleagues: to exchange information to ensure efficient working and to facilitate
