Course Description:
Emphasizes comprehending simple conversations, communicating survival needs, reading phrases
and simple sentences, and performing communicative written tasks. Utilizes various languagebased activities to enhance family language learning with adults and children reading together.
Develops parenting skills using language appropriate for this level. This course includes the
Beginning ESL 2 curriculum. Open Entry/Open Exit.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs):
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to
 answer questions about a familiar context after a level-appropriate listening prompt
 practice responses to previously studied questions in various scenarios
 identify sentences on previously studied topic
 write 3–5 related sentences on personal interest, experience or knowledge
 recognize a chart or graph.
Tests/Lessons/Homework Assignments:
Students take ESL pre/post tests, CASAS tests and other tests/assessments as provided by the
instructor. Classroom lessons/materials focus on the following life skills categories: basic
communication, consumer economics, community resources, health and safety, occupational
knowledge, and government and law. Homework assignments may be given.
Grading Standards:
Students who attend at least one class meeting receive one of the following grades at the end of a
semester/session:
P
(pass)
SP
(satisfactory progress)
NP
(no measurable progress)
Attendance Requirements:
Students who do not attend the first class meeting, or are absent for five day classes or four
evening classes within a 2-week period without the instructor’s approval may be dropped.
