Course Description:
Emphasizes higher level language activities, conversations which convey complex thought patterns, authentic material which expands the use of critical thinking skills, and realistic and creative/academic writing. This is the seventh course in the Continuing Education ESL continuum.
Five high school elective credits may be granted if student passes the ESL posttest for this class with 70% or better. Open Entry/Open Exit.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs):
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to
answer questions about a familiar context that includes new information after a level-
appropriate listening prompt
discuss information with a partner on an impromptu topic
construct meaning from complex vocabulary based on life skill topic
construct a short paragraph on a topic
interpret information on a chart or graph.
Tests/Lessons/Homework Assignments:
Students take ESL pre/post tests, CASAS tests and other tests/assessments as provided by the instructor. Classroom lessons/materials focus on the following life skills categories: basic communication, consumer economics, community resources, health and safety, occupational knowledge, and government and law. Homework assignments may be given.
Grading Standards:
Students who attend at least one class meeting receive one of the following grades at the end of a semester/session:
COM (complete Intermediate ESL 3 posttest with 70 percent or higher)
P (pass)
SP (satisfactory progress)
NP (no measurable progress)
Attendance Requirements:
Students who do not attend the first class meeting, or are absent for five day classes or four evening classes within a 2week period without the instructor’s approval may be dropped
