Rancho Santiago Community College District Santa Ana College School of Continuing Education Academic ESL Intermediate 3 Course Overview Instructor: Class Information: Academic ESL Intermediate 3, Site__, Room__, Days__, Time__ Section Number: Term: Holidays: Course Description: Fourth academic ESL course emphasizing complex grammatical structures of English, reading skills, and more complex paragraph writing. This course integrates listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Five high school elective credits may be granted if student passes the ESL posttest with 70% or better. Open Entry/Open Exit. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs): Upon completion of this course, students will be able to listen to a conversation or short passage and respond appropriately discuss information on an impromptu topic demonstrate the higher level reading skills of making inferences, drawing conclusions and comprehending main ideas produce paragraph writings using appropriate grammatical structures interpret information on a chart or graph. Tests/Lessons/Homework Assignments: Students take ESL pre/post tests, CASAS tests and other tests/assessments as provided by the instructor. Classroom lessons/materials focus on the following life skills categories: basic communication, consumer economics, community resources, health and safety, occupational knowledge, and government and law. Homework assignments may be given. Grading Standards: Students who attend at least one class meeting receive one of the following grades at the end of a semester/session: COM (complete Intermediate ESL 3 posttest with 70 percent or higher) P (pass) SP (satisfactory progress) NP (no measurable progress) Attendance Requirements: Students who do not attend the first class meeting, or are absent for five day classes or four evening classes within a 2-week period without the instructor’s approval may be dropped .
