2015 Counselor & Administrator Nuts & Bolts Session Dual Credit News Honor Cords— 235 honor cords were awarded to graduating Seniors who had earned 24 or more dual credit hours. What is Dual Credit? Process by which a high school student enrolls in a college course and receives simultaneous academic credit for the course from both the college and the high school. Dual credit courses are college level courses which require that all pre-requisites for that course be met prior to enrollment. Students who are in TSI compliance, and have permission from their parent, high school principal and the Dean of Admissions and Records are eligible to enroll in dual credit courses. Dual Credit Changes Effective Fall 2015 HB 505- passed this legislative session May not limit the number of dual credit courses or hours in which a student may enroll while in high school. May not limit the number of dual credit courses or hours in which a student may enroll each semester, academic year or the grade levels at which a high school student may be eligible to enroll in a dual credit course. However, students must still be TSI compliant or exempt and meet all admission requirements. Dual Credit Changes Effective Fall 2015 Dual Credit students are no longer limited to 15 hours per semester. Students are no longer restricted to 2 courses per semester without additional approval. Requirement that students taking 3 or more courses must make at least a grade of “C” in each course in order to continue taking more than 2 courses will most likely be repealed. How are dual credit classes offered? Face-to-face classroom at the high school taught by high school teachers who also have necessary credentials to teach in college (Master’s degree with 18 hours in area) Face-to-face classroom at the high school taught by fulltime SPC faculty member Interactive Television (ITV) Online Dual Credit Courses Meet Core Requirements Texas public colleges/universities must accept up to 60 credit hours Transfer versus Apply to Degree Transfer Course by Course Transfer Complete Core (42 hours) Transfer Student Scholarship Opportunities Students should contact their universities for more information. Where do we find Dual Credit Information? Creating the ApplyTexas Account Students create their account with basic demographic information as well as an username and password. After students “save” their account, they should “create a new application” for a two year community college and choose SPC. Students should answer “yes” to the question are they completing this application for Dual Credit while in high school. Creating the ApplyTexas Application Students should use their social security numbers even though it states it is optional. SSN will be required in the near future. This will help us process your file more efficiently. Students should choose dual credit as their “basis” of seeking admission and “where they plan to enroll”. This will prevent you from being charge full price for fees. Specify Dual Credit on ApplyTexas Completing ApplyTexas When will my students receive their Acceptance Letter? • 24-48 hours after they have submitted ApplyTexas admission application online. • Students will receive Acceptance Letters via email as well as U.S. mail. • Check email frequently. • Save SPC username and password found on Acceptance Letter • Don’t confuse SPC username & password with ApplyTexas username and password. When will my students receive their Acceptance Letter? • Contact Admissions & Records or Dual Credit Office, if they don’t receive an email. **Allow up to 2 weeks processing time after you have submitted all other paperwork to be able to register**. New Form Required Each Semester How to Save Time and Work Make sure student has completed ApplyTexas Application prior to submitting paperwork to SPC. Test scores, etc. that are received prior to ApplyTexas cannot be processed which means duplicate submission by counselors. Use correct social security numbers on ApplyTexas, test scores and transcripts. How to Save Time and Work Complete the dual credit enrollment forms and submit as a complete packet ready for processing. Mail packets to ONE PERSON. Don’t send copies of the same materials to other people as both then have to process the same material twice. Testing Information, TSI Compliance, Exemption & Eligibility What is TSI? • TSI stands for Texas Success Initiative (Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board). • Is designed to determine College Readiness in Reading, Writing and Math. • Designed to prevent students from enrolling in courses they are not ready for. • Is not used to determine admission; but is used for college course placement purposes. • Determines eligibility for enrollment in dual credit courses. TSI Exemptions • ACT—Composite 23, English 19, Math 19 Must earn composite score or can’t use English and Math scores. • SAT—Combined 1070, ELA 500 Math 500 Must earn combined score or can’t use ELA and Math scores. • STAAR Algebra II EOC—4000 • Prior Dual Credit Coursework with a passing grade TSI Compliance • TSI-A— Reading 351, Math 350, *Writing 363 with a 4 on Essay or Essay 5 or higher *Must take ELA & Write Placer together on the first test. If students pass one and not the other, they can retest on just ELA or just the Essay. TSI Compliance Students enrolling in Workforce (Career Technical Education) courses applied to Level I Certificates (such as Welding & Cosmetology) do not have to be TSI compliant. Juniors taking dual credit courses may use PSAT & PLAN scores to satisfy TSI requirements for the junior year and must make at least a C in the courses they are taking in order to be able to demonstrate enrollment eligibility for their senior year. Students could be exempt the following year on one or more areas based on prior college coursework. TSI Enrollment Eligibility • • EOC—Algebra I STAAR—4000 AND passing Algebra II Grade EOC—English II STAAR—Final Phase-In Score (Reading & Writing 4000) Can only be used for the junior year & reestablish compliance as a senior or be exempt. Retrieving Student Usernames & Passwords I would like to see available courses but I don’t have a Campus Connect Login. Family Education Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA) Dual Credit Course Approval Form gives permission from parent/student for SPC to disclose information to the high school personnel. Faculty will only discuss information about the course (attendance, grades, assignments and etc. with the student). Student can sign a Release of Information Form found on our website for academic information to be release to parents. Grades Numeric grades for Dual Credit online and ITV classes will be emailed to you at the end of the semester from Vanessa Olivo, Administrative Assistant to the Registrar. Please don’t contact instructors directly for student grades. Drops & Drop Slips Drop Slips for Dual Credit classes are found on our website under Dual Credit and Forms & Tools. Should be signed by Student and High School Counselor Dual credit students are not charged for dropping classes. Is not done in person, should be faxed or emailed to A&R or Dual Credit. Drops & Drop Slips Refunds are calculated based on the day the drop slip is received in A&R Office. Classes are not considered dropped until the drop slip is received and processed by A&R. Please check Dual Credit Calendar for the last day to drop for each semester. Fall will be Nov. 18th. Drops & Drop Slips For 100% refund full withdrawals must be done before the first class day. On reduction of class load, 100% refund is possible through the 12th class day. After the 12th class day (Census Date), all courses become part of the student’s permanent record. Fall is Sept. 9th. Satisfactory Academic Progress SAP is the monitoring tool of the Financial Aid Office in every college and university nation wide with its rules and parameters dictated by the U.S. Dept. of Education. Poor class performance, low grades and withdrawals after the 12th class day could impact future financial aid eligibility. Satisfactory Academic Progress All institutions will monitor 3 areas: (1) percentage of courses completed(pace), (2) GPA (3) length of enrollment in respect to completion of degree or certificate. Please contact each institution’s Financial Aid Office for more information. Academic Progress Academic Progress is monitored by the Admissions & Records Office after a student has completed 6 credit hours. Students who have not earned a 2.00 GPA after having taken 6 credit hours will be placed on Academic Probation. Students can enroll while they are on probation—although we should discuss all pros and cons. Academic Progress Students who have been placed on Academic Probation will receive notification that they must meet with their advisor and complete a success plan. We will make these items available to you so that you can meet with your students (they do not have to come to campus). It is optional. Please make sure your students are registered in all of their classes prior to sending your list. Dual Credit Payment Deadlines August 27th – Dual Credit Parent & Student Payment Deadline If payment is not received by the deadline, classes will be dropped & students will have to be registered again. September 2nd – Last day to utilize fall Installment Contract Option Please remember: Registration is not complete until your dual credit fees are paid! Registration Changes NO DUAL CREDIT REGISTRATION DAY AT REESE CENTER THIS YEAR. Last day to Add/Drop for ITV & Internet Classes August 27th by 3:00 p.m. Last day to add for High School Campus Classes During late registration is September 4th by 3:00 p.m. After August 27th payment must be made at the time you register. If students completed their admissions and dual credit paperwork early— they have been registered by the Dual Credit Office. Things to Remember about College: SPC & High School Fall Classes Begin AUGUST 24th! PLAN AHEAD (DEADLINES ARE DEADLINES!!). Allow time for processing of applications and materials. Cannot register for ITV or online courses after August 27th. Last day to register for a high school campus class is Friday September 4th. Census Day is September 9th.
