I am thrilled you have chosen to study French and I look forward to starting our year together. This is my 2nd year here at Wydown, however, it is my 12th year teaching French. I love the French language and all aspects of French culture and can’t wait to share my passion for the Francophone world with you. Allons-y! COURSE DESCRIPTION The course is organized in 5 units. Unit 1: Salut, les copains! (greetings and introductions) Unit 2: Qu’est-ce qui te plaît? (likes and dislikes) Unit 3: Comment est ta famille? (asking about and describing people) Unit 4: Mon année scolaire (asking about classes and giving opinions) Unit 5: Le temps libre (asking about interests and making plans with friends) REQUIRED MATERIALS French textbook Bien Dit IA Binder (preferable) or folder Notebook (3 ring NOT a composition) for French class ONLY Pencil (You may take notes in pen, but DO NOT use pen for homework, tests, or quizzes) Assignment notebook/Planner (for homework) ***BRING ALL REQUIRED MATERIALS TO CLASS EVERYDAY*** SUGGESTED OPTIONAL MATERIALS FOR HOME French/English dictionary Index cards for creating flash cards ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS • Come to class prepared and ready to start • Complete assignments with care, neatness, and accuracy • Make up work in a timely manner • Communicate concerns so solutions can be found GRADES Each quarter your grades will be calculated in the following categories: Interpretive communication (Listening/Reading) Interpersonal communication (Person to Person) 25% 25% Presentational communication (Speaking/Writing) Control of studied structures and vocabulary Practice and homework 20% 5% 25% WEBSITES 1. The class website is a great resource for you. Each day I post homework assignments, and a brief summary of what we did in class for that day. If you are absent, you should check the website to get your missing work so that you do not fall behind. To access our class’s website: go to the Wydown website click Staff, then Christine Darling. 2. We will also use the online textbook with Bien Dit IA. It can be accessed at my.hrw.com. TUTORING If you need extra help, please let me know as soon as possible and we will make arrangements for tutoring. CLASSROOM/BEHAVIORAL STANDARDS Soyez préparé(e)! Bring French book, binder or folder in which to keep handouts), notebook for taking notes, homework, pencil, and a positive attitude to class each day. Participate! Soyez à l’heure! Be in your assigned seat at the beginning of the period. At a 4th tardy to class, a detention will be issued. Soyez respecteux(euse)! Listen respectfully to the teacher and classmates and pay attention to the lesson. Parlez français! Try to use the French that you are learning. If you know how to say something (or even part of something) in French, say it! That is the best way to learn. N’utilisez pas les téléphones portables! Cell phones should not be visible or audible once class starts. They will be confiscated if used during class time.
