SUGGESTED EXPECTATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT, REAPPOINTMENT,
PROMOTION, AND TENURE
In addition to the FSU Guidelines for Tenure and Promotion and the Faculty Handbook,
the faculty within the Department of Government and History, suggests the following
expectations:
A. TEACHING:
Criteria include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Clearly developed course objectives and requirements, instructional materials,
grading procedures and evaluation materials. Integrating technology when
possible.
2. Active role in departmental discussions regarding curriculum, program
development, and the achievement of program goals.
3. The creation of new courses and the revision of old courses to meet the evolving
needs of the program.
4. Willingness to teach courses that are in the best interest of students and the
program.
5. The adoption of behaviors and habits in the classroom that model the values of
ethical leadership
6. Developing and practicing assessment of student performance that are consistent
with the area’s goals.
7. Documentation of teaching effectiveness using instruments and procedures
approved by the area. (Peer Review, Student Evaluations, Student Presentations,
etc.)
8. Continued professional development in teaching (attending workshops,
professional meetings, and participation in faculty development activities).
B. SCHOLARSHIP/RESEARCH ACTIVITY:
Scholarship is the dissemination of created knowledge for the advancement of human
understanding. Research must be of high quality, consistent in their application of ethical
practices, work toward the creation of a body of knowledge, and should be recognized
regionally and nationally among one’s peers in the field(s) inside and outside of the
University.
Criteria include, but are not limited to the following:
1. A productive record of research activity, which reveals significant and developing
achievements in a field(s) of specialization.
2. Research-based books published by non-vanity presses.
3. Publications in the form of refereed articles in journals, which are recognized as
scholarly in content.
4. Non-refereed scholarly publications (book reviews, professional opinion pieces,

C. SERVICE: Service to the department, college, university, local community, and
disciplinary field
Criteria include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Committee membership including consistent involvement/attendance
2. Assuming leadership roles for the university (Chair of a committee, Area
Coordinator, Chair of a Department, Faculty Senate member, Honors Faculty
member)
3. Advising a student organization
4. Advising student majors for one’s Area
5. Assisting local schools through presentations or exhibitions
6. Committee work (or other leadership roles) for regional, state, and national
associations
7. Editorships for scholarly organizations (journals, websites, publishing houses,
etc)
FOR APPOINTMENT/REAPPOINTMENT AS ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
In addition to the FSU Guidelines for Tenure and Promotion and the Faculty Handbook,
the Department of Government and History requires the following expectations:
A. TEACHING:
1. Evidence of ability to organize course materials, content and presentations in
order to accomplish teaching effectiveness.
2. Willingness to take an active role in departmental discussions regarding
curriculum and program development.
3. Evidence of potential to maintain a level of student performance consistent with
departmental and/or degree program standards.
4. Evidence of ability to develop strong teaching skills.
5. Evidence of excellence in advising.
B. SCHOLARSHIP/CREATIVE ACTIVITY:
1. Evidence of a developing ability in research or other relevant creative activity
2. Evidence of a consistent pattern of behavior that will lead to scholarly success
C. SERVICE:
1. Evidence of the ability and willingness to serve and promote the department,
college, university, local community, and disciplinary field
2. Willingness to take an active role in student advising, including students’
course work, program choices, and career planning.
APPOINTMENT/PROMOTION
TO ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
A. TEACHING:
The teaching criteria for promotion or appointment to Associate Professor are the
same as permanent tenure. In addition, faculty promotion to Associate Professor must
have evidence of consistent teaching effectiveness and demonstrated leadership in the
area of teaching.
Additional criteria include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Evidence of consistent course improvements and curriculum development
2. Leadership efforts in curriculum and program development that benefit students and
the evolution of the program.
3. Leadership efforts in teaching effectiveness, (i.e., development of instructional tools,
workshops, and presentations).
4. Sustained commitment to faculty development
5. Consistent evidence of teaching effectiveness (student narratives, anonymous or nonanonymous feedback, student evaluations)
B. SCHOLARSHIP:
The scholarship criteria for promotion or appointment to Associate Professor are the
same as those for permanent tenure. Evidence should be presented of a sustained record
of research of high quality.
Additional criteria include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. The publication/dissemination of at least one journal article/book - must be peerreviewed.
2. Evidence of a consistent pattern of behavior that will lead to continued scholarly
success.
3. Evidence of disciplinary recognition (either regionally and nationally) by one’s peers.
C. SERVICE:
The service criteria for promotion or appointment to Associate Professor is the same
as permanent tenure: Evidence should reflect a sustained record of service to
department, college, university, local community, and disciplinary field.
Additional criteria include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Evidence of a willingness to take on leadership positions
2. Willingness to promote the university in the community through service opportunities
PROMOTION/APPOINTMENT
TO PROFESSOR
In addition to the FSU Guidelines for Tenure and Promotion and the Faculty Handbook,
the Department of Government and History suggested expectations are the following:
A. TEACHING:
The teaching criteria for promotion or appointment to Professor are the same as
Associate Professor.
Additional criteria include, but are not limited to the following:
1. An excellent record of teaching has been established
2. Sustained and effective leadership in curriculum and program development.
3. Sustained results from leadership in teaching effectiveness
4. Sustained faculty development to enhance teaching
B. SCHOLARSHIP:
The scholarship criteria for promotion or appointment to Professor are the same as
Associate Professor.
Additional criteria include, but are not limited to the following:
1. A record of high quality in scholarship activities has been established
2. The candidate’s scholarship record reveals evidence of an established scholarly
agenda and achievement in the area(s) of specialization.
3. Receives honors, awards, citations, critical reviews, and other forms of recognition by
peers both inside and outside the university.
C. SERVICE:
The service criteria for promotion or appointment to Professor are the same as
Associate professor.
Additional criteria may include but are not limited to the following:
1. Continued evidence of relevant and effective service
2. Sustained effective leadership in various service areas.
3. Sustained and effective leadership to department, college, university, local community,
and disciplinary field.
DEFINITIONS
(RESEARCH, CREATIVE ACTIVITY, SCHOLARSHIP, AND SERVICE)
Research: 1) serious inquiry or examination resulting in the discovery and interpretation
of knowledge, revision of accepted theories in the light of new knowledge, or practical
application of such new or revised theories; 2) Research productivity is typically
measured by the publication of articles in archival journals, conference proceedings,
books, invited lectures, patents, original software, individual and block grants, research
awards and honors.
Scholarly Activity: 1) includes the creation, evaluation, dissemination, and application
of knowledge; 2) Scholarly activities is typically measured by the publication of articles
in archival journals, conference proceedings, books, invited lectures, conference
participation such as, symposium, paper and poster presentation, discussant (locally,
regionally, nationally, or internationally).
Service: Formal and informal professional assignments or activities on behalf of the
Department, College, University, community, and disciplinary field. Expectations
regarding quality of service contributions increase as a faculty member’s career
progresses. The minimum required for permanent tenure and promotion depends upon
rank.
Service contributions include, but are not limited to, the following:
A.
Departmental: Department committee participation, or area coordinator
(undergraduate, graduate), student advising, special assignments from
the chair, etc.
B.
College/University: Participation in committees and assignments at the
college and university level.
C.
Professional: Participation in activities relevant to the faculty member’s
area(s) of expertise. Activities include, but are not limited to participation in
professional organizations, paper or article reviewer, etc.
D.
Community: Service may include participation in regional, national, or
international community activities directly related to the faculty member’s
profession, such as lectures and presentations, and professional advice to nonprofit agencies. Community involvement may serve as additional evidence of
service but does not replace involvement at the Departmental,
College/University or professional level.
