Dear Science Olympiad Students and Family, Congratulations to all of our wonderful students for their hard work up to this point. Whether this is your final year in Science Olympiad or your first, YOU have made this year an amazing adventure in the world of science. Although our returning students know the drill by now, here are a few reminders for our Regional competition this Saturday, March 5th, 2016. Please review these as a family. Logistics: 1. The competition is at Lindenwood University (address: 209 S Kingshighway, St Charles MO). Attached are directions and above is a map labeled with places on campus you might need to find. directions to Lindenwood 2. Impounding will occur from 8:10-8:50 AM. 3. We would like everyone to show up by 8:30 AM 4. If you have any other concerns feel free to text us or e-mail us. It would be a good idea to have our numbers saved in your phone in case of an emergency: a. Emily Wen: 763.259.8049 (emily.wen@wustl.edu) b. Sandra Sermos: 314.306.4393 (sandrasermos@claytonschools.net) 5. Our teams are Wydown 1 and Wydown 2. BE VERY CLEAR WHICH TEAM YOU ARE ON. Write your team name on every test you take. J. Scheidegger Center Butler Loft Young Hall LUCC for Awards General reminders: 1. Be good sports! We expect you to congratulate all competitors for their achievements. In essence, WE DON’T WANT TO HEAR ANY OF YOU BOOING AT THE AWARDS CEREMONY. ANYTHING THAT IS NOT POSITIVE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. Represent Wydown well. 2. Say thank you to all of your proctors! They are taking time out of their busy schedules to help make this competition a success FOR YOU. 3. IF YOU HAVE A DISAGREEMENT WITH THE TEST ( for example, the proctor did not follow the rules), approach ONLY us (Mrs. Sermos and PL Squad) about the issue. DO NOT confront or question the proctor. Explain to one of us what occurred and we will determine further action.. 4. If you have been placed in a new event: Do not panic! Try your best in the event and give reasonable answers. You should try your best to answer every question because writing SOMETHING down is more likely to be given partial credit over an unanswered question. Check with your partner and plan accordingly. 5. WE ARE A TEAM. This means that regardless of what events you are participating in, you should be trying your best to help your team get the best point total for the event. (your placement in each event is equivalent to the points added to the team score i.e. 1st place is 1 point, last place is 13 points, not showing up is 14 points). 6. Because this is a Regional competition, we will not be given the exams back. This is all the more reason to make sure you correctly write down YOUR team name on the test so there are no mix-ups during rankings. 7. Your current team place is not set in stone. As long as one of our teams places in the top 3 (I believe, not entirely sure), we will progress to State. We will use the Regional results to determine the State team. Be aware that selecting teams is a difficult decision since you are all wonderful and we only do it for the fairness of the overall Science Olympiad competition. Even if you are not placed on the final State team, we would encourage you to continue coming to practice to help our State members prepare BECAUSE WE ARE A TEAM. Complete the following form and return it to S. Sermos by Thursday. There is no build event this Friday, but there will be a brief “stand up meeting in Room 232 after school on Friday.
