Dear Parents of CIT Applicant:
We are offering an exciting leadership opportunity for 8th graders tied in with our Sixth Grade
Camp program. This Counselor-In-Training program (CIT) is open to approximately fourteen
eighth graders who display potential leadership qualities, responsibility, and are interested in
mentoring relationships with sixth graders at Wydown.
Counselors-in-training will receive training with the high school counselors before the sixth
graders arrive. They will learn how to plan and lead activities with sixth graders, learn about
conflict mediation, and will practice goal setting and reflection on a daily basis. They go to
activities, dine, and sleep with their assigned cabin group at camp. They will meet every evening
with the CIT group under my guidance and supervision. Finally, the CIT’s will participate in
teambuilding initiatives designed to encourage peer communication and support.
The students will leave at 8:00 a.m. from CHS on Sunday, September 27, to head down to
Sherwood Forest Camp. They will arrive home on the buses with the sixth graders on Friday
night around 6 pm. Pick up is at Wydown at this time. Students must be able to attend the entire
length of the program.
Application Process:
The application paperwork is due to me (room 118, or by email) no later than Friday, September
4 (before 3:30). In addition to completing the attached application materials, individuals
interested in this program must be prepared to complete all missed class/homework in a timely
manner to the expectations of their teachers. If selected, each student must have conversations
with his/her teachers ahead of time to find out the teachers’ expectations for work completion and
will be required to attain signatures from each teacher. Students may stay in the library for quiet
study the weeks before and after camp until 4:20. If selected, each student must be able to attend
2 lunch meetings with me the week before camp.
This program is selective. We have fourteen slots and need approximately an equal number of
boys and girls. Even though many students may qualify, not all can feasibly be selected. We are
looking for students who could benefit from, enrich, and extend our sixth grade camp program.
The selection process will happen in two stages: 1) application screening process and
teacher/principal/counselor consultation, and 2) interview process with principal/counselor
consultation. When we determine students for the interview process, we will email the student to
schedule a time slot. If selected for the program, the student will receive more information about
what to bring and how to prepare. Please sign below that you understand and have read this
information regarding the CIT program.
Please contact me if you have any questions!
