The snow has finally arrived and winter is in full swing. This means that I have 20 students who need to change in and out of snow gear twice a day. I can not stress enough how important it is for the kids to be able to dress and undress themselves and to be able to pack their gear independently. Imagine having 20 kids at your house and needing to help them all get ready to play in the snow! In years past I have found that we lose up to 30 minutes of instructional time once snow clothes come into the picture; the faster and more efficient our changing is, the more time we have to learn! Here are a few helpful tips: Order matters! Snow pants, boots, hat, coat (zip it!), gloves. Send your child’s gear in a cloth bag with a wide opening and handles. They can easily pack and unpack it and you can hang it to dry. (Shoving them into their backpack DOES NOT WORK!) Water-proof gloves or mittens are important for dry, warm hands. Shoes for the classroom are needed daily. Feel free to send in a pair to keep at school! If your child has shoes that tie, take the time to teach them how to tie them. First graders are more than capable of this! Snow gear needs to be taken out and dried at home daily. Remember, the kids are outside for a 30 minute recess before lunch and then a 15 minute recess at the end of the day. Every child goes outside; it is extremely important that you send your child with the appropriate clothing so they are warm and comfortable. If getting winter gear is a challenge for you, please let me know as I am more than happy to help you make sure your child has what they need. Happy Winter! Mrs. Sciacca Week of January 4, 2016
