***FLIP OVER 

Week of November 9, 2015

What did we learn last week?

Math: We worked some more on fact families and learned about “true” and “false” equations. Students were introduced to the concept of balancing equations – this is a tricky concept! Chapter 4, Subtraction to 10, was wrapped up on Friday with our chapter assessment.

Word Study: The students worked on their personal word sorts and personal Word Wall Words. Digraphs and blends were introduced through investigations and carefully looking during shared reading and while reading our morning message. We continued to review vowels sounds with an emphasis on “u” and “i”.

Reader’s Workshop : Our detective work continued as students worked on close reading; they have learned to study the pictures carefully as well as think more about what they read. We practiced using words we know as anchors to make sure we are reading carefully. Each child put a retell chart in their literacy binder. They will be working on retelling the stories they read by using character names, setting and all the important events in the order they occured. Some students are ready to extend their thinking to identifying the problems and solutions in the stories they read.

Writer’s Workshop : We learned that authors use interesting beginnings and endings and began trying to implement this into our own writing. Students are working on coming up with catchy titles for their books, connecting sentences, and using transition words. The kids also learned that writers revise their work as they go.

Social Studies/Science: Our next Social Studies unit, Families Then and Now, was introduced through stories about different families and discussions about our own families and how they are similar and different. We also had Fire Safety this week and learned about creating a map of our house with the escape routes marked.

Our goal tree is filling up!
