Math: Our work on addition and subtraction to 20 continued this week. We expanded our new knowledge by applying it to story problems and doing some critical thinking work. After doing some review work, we took our Chapter 8 assessment. Please continue to work with your child on memorizing facts to 10 (both addition and subtraction) as well as doubles facts to 20. Having these facts mastered is essential as we move into more difficult skills.
Word Study: Our Word Study focused on looking at “ay” and “ai” spelling patterns in combination with “magic e” words with a “ long a ” sound. We did several hands-on activities, found these spelling patterns in our
Morning Messages as well as our shared reading, and began applying our new knowledge to our reading and writing. We finished up with our personal sorts from last week and explored our new Word Study materials.
Reade r’s Workshop : I introduced our new reading unit, “Getting to Know Our Characters”. We learned that the characters in our books are fun to think about and that there are many ways to learn more about them. We learned to study the cover and pictures, to hang on to what we read across the pages, and to pay close attention to the endings in our books. The kids also practiced putting themselves in the characters shoes and asking themselves, “What would I think or do if I were this character?”
Writer’s Workshop: Our nonfiction writing unit is off and running! The kids are doing a great job writing books that teach. We learned how nonfiction books use pictures to teach by studying what other author’s do in their books. We used what we learned about key words in our nonfiction reading unit to see how important it is to include these words in our own writing. The kids practiced using all they know about spelling to include these important words in their books. We have also been working on using our time effectively and trying to write a book in one day.
Social Studies/Science: We have been reading books about winter and discussing the changes we see during this time of year. The kids have been doing a great job thinking about what we learn and making connections as well as forming questions they would like to find answers to.
